Early Childhood Education

The Ann Arbor Preschool and Family Center continues to serve over 400 students who participate in our Head Start, GSRP and ECDD (Early Childhood for Developmentally Delayed) program along with First Steps, a community based program providing play group opportunities  and home visits for infants and toddlers.  These programs are located in our state of the art Preschool Site located at 2725 Boardwalk Street.

Tuition Preschool

Tuition based preschool programs are available at Allen and Thurston Schools (2560 Towner Boulevard and 2300 Prairie Street, respectively). Students attending our satellite sites enjoy all the benefits of a developmentally appropriate early childhood program along with the special opportunity to engage with students during the elementary school day.

We know that a child who has participated in a high quality preschool experience will be prepared for a successful transition to kindergarten and life-long success in school and beyond. Our preschool teachers are highly certified educators who are dedicated to providing the very best in early childhood programming. They work closely with the elementary colleagues and benefit from ongoing professional development.

Young 5’s

Preschool child using activity bookThe Ann Arbor Public Schools began offering a half-day Young 5’s Developmental Kindergarten in the Fall of 2008 for children whose parents feel that they are not yet ready for a traditional kindergarten program. This alternative program offers a gift of time to nurture developmental maturity and school readiness.

The Young 5’s  program is located at Abbot Elementary. Students who participate in the Young 5’s program will return to their home school the following year to enroll in kindergarten in preparation for success in first grade.

Students with birthdays between September 1 and December 1 are eligible to attend. The thematic curriculum is aligned with State of Michigan standards and benchmarks with more time spent on foundational skills. For more information contact Abbot Elementary School at 994-1901.
