This Week’s Good News!

  • Congratulations to the Class of 2010!  We are proud of all our students who earned a diploma from the Ann Arbor Public Schools.
  • The following Ann Arbor Public School students were recognized as scholars and leaders by the Ann Arbor Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. on May 15, 2010 at the Solid Gold in Education Brunch, which took place at the Four Points Sheraton.
    The following middle and high school students were recognized as Solid Gold awardees:  Jasmine Hampton: Tappan; Danielle Thesiger: Scarlett; Savannah Thomas: Clague; Chinonye Uche: Slauson; Olivia Merritt: Forsythe; Antonia Smith: Pioneer; Chelsea Evans-Warren: Community; and Wilniqua Battle: Roberto Clemente.
    These students were recognized for their leadership, commitment to academics, and service within the local community.
    The following Pioneer High School seniors were also recognized for their academic excellence and leadership and awarded scholarships to assist them next fall as they attend college:  Ogechi Jessica Obidike (will attend The University of Michigan) and Christina Wade (will attend Spelman College).
    The Ann Arbor Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta is proud to support these young ladies as they continue to positively impact our local community.
  • The Wastenaw Elementary Science Olympiad was held on Saturday, June 5, 2010 and was attended by almost 1200 students in grades 2, 3, 4 and 5. These students represented 19 elementary schools from Washtenaw County. Most all of them brought a parent, and siblings so Skyline High School was packed with scientists and science lovers. Volunteering for this event were hundreds of parents and about a hundred middle and high school students from Ann Arbor.
    Congratulations to all the winners and also to all the competitors for their great Sportsmanship. Every school went home with some winning ribbons.

  • The Ann Arbor District Library had 253 submissions this year to its annual Teen Short Story Contest and the Ann Arbor Public Schools was very well represented.  The judges, who are published authors,  were very impressed with the caliber and creativity of your students. The Ann Arbor District Library is thrilled to be able to support literacy in this way.

  • Kayla Stoler, Community High School Senior, was recognized as one of 24 Outstanding High School Graduates  by the Detroit News.  This is the 25th year the Detroit News has honored Michigan's top graduating high school students. Winners have passed a rigorous screening process supervised by a select panel of educators from throughout the state. Kayla earned recognition as the Detroit Media Partnership Scholar in Language Arts. "I've always felt that as a citizen, it's my duty to give back to my community.  Though I think global causes are worthy, local causes should come first."
    Runners-up are:  CHS Senior Julia Mogerman in Journalism;  CHS Senior Max Bowen in Performing Arts; CHS Senior Allison Ferguson in Visual Arts; and CHS Senior Sarah Juster in World Studies.
  • Roberto Clemente students Arkeys Ford-Roberts and Jeremy Johnson were awarded the Harold Eastman Outstanding “Kenny” Perseverance and Courage Award on May 19,by the Breakfast Optimist Club.
  • Clague eighth grader Atulya Shetty has qualified to represent the U.S. in the 2010 World Youth Chess Championships (WYCC) scheduled to be held in Greece in October 2010.  He will play in the U-14 section.  Atulya has previously represented the U.S. in the 2006 WYCC held in the Republic of Georgia and the 2008 WYCC held in Vietnam.  Here is a link to the announcement from the United States Chess Federation http://main.uschess.org/content/view/10431/141/
