Mrs. Katz

Hi. Visit my fifth grade instrumental music website.

My name is Deborah Katz. Along with my colleague Rosalie Koenig, I teach fifth graders how to play musical instruments. Mrs. Koenig teaches the string instruments and I teach the woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Just like our fifth graders at King, I first started learning to play the flute in school. At Green Elementary School in West Bloomfield, Michigan, we learned the recorder for the first half of fourth grade and then we chose an instrument to study for the rest of the year. I chose the flute after the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Woodwind Quintet visited our school. I loved the sound of the flute from that moment and was determined to learn to play it. Learning an instrument wasn't easy and it took me about 6 weeks to get a sound on my flute, but persistence paid off and now, over 50 years later, I still love playing the flute.

I studied music education at Western Michigan University and later received Master of Music and Specialist of Music degrees in woodwind instruments and flute performance from the University of Michigan School of Music. I have been working as a public school educator since 1975. During this time, I have taught elementary general music and 5th - 12th grade band in "the Thumb," West Bloomfield Schools, Berkley School District, and most recently in Ann Arbor. I have also worked as the Coordinator of Music Education for AAPS and as the Coordinator of the Ann Arbor Public Schools Educational Technology and Computing Center! I am a bit of a techie and I enjoy finding ways to use computer technology in my instrumental music classes.

In my personal time, I love playing the flute, reading books, and riding my bike along the Little Traverse Wheelway in northern Michigan. My husband Ralph is a wonderful clarinetist with a day job in computer network support and we have two grown daughters who learned to enjoy music in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. Our older daughter now works in health care in Ann Arbor and our younger daughter coaches middle and high school rowing in Delaware. I am still loving my job teaching instrumental music at King, Logan, and Clague. I look forward to helping King 5th graders discover the joy of playing an instrument for themselves every year!
