schools to watch  Clague Middle School has recently been designated as a "School to Watch"

by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform!

To achieve Schools to Watch designation, a middle school must demonstrate that it has met the following criteria:

    1. It is academically excellent and challenges all students.

    2. It is developmentally responsive and sensitive to the unique developmental challenges of early adolescents.

    3. The school is socially equitable, democratic and fair, providing all students with high-quality teachers, resources and supports.

    4. The school has norms, structures and organizational arrangements to support and sustain its path toward excellence.

Clague Middle School will receive recognition at a special school ceremony and at the National Forum Schools to Watch Conference in Washington, D.C. in June.

"Clague Middle School is a wonderful place for middle grade youth to grow, learn, and explore. Students are happy and behave as learners. The climate of caring is obvious from the moment the students enter the building. Students are set-up for success with supports, prompts and encouragement. Classrooms had clear learning objectives. The building is spacious providing ample space for special needs. Minimal class time is spent dealing with discipline issues and everyone understands that there is a focus on learning." --Quote from Schools to Watch report

    ____________________________________________________________________

Students, if you or someone you know is being bullied or harassed you can send a confidential email to claguehelp@gmail.com.  All reports will be kept confidential, be investigated and taken seriously.

    October is Bully Prevention Month
    "Unity Tree in a Vase"

The Unity Tree is a powerful symbol reminding everyone that bullying can be prevented when we all come together - united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion.  Creating a Unity Tree is an interactive and hands-on activity, a shared experience in which anyone can participate and everyone can watch the tree grow.

Each person contributes their own unique experiences, creates ideas, and strategies by writing positive messages on leaves that are attached to the tree.  As the number of leaves increases, it creates a visual reminder, demonstrating that when we are united we can create social change.

During the week of October 1st during lunch in the cafeteria, all participants are invited to write a message on the orange strips of construction paper or tape, which will represent the 'leaves' of the tree.  We will attach each response to the end of the slip around a tree branch, so the message is easy to read.  Below are three options for types of messages you may respond to, or create your own:

If you planted a seed, what would you tell your seed about bullying?
What can you do to change/impact your school's culture about bullying?
How can you support a friend/peer who is being bullied?

It is almost time for the first Box-Top entry.  Please bring in your boxtops by October 19th.  Bring them to Ms. Rye in room 229 or the Main Office.

    SO THERE'S A NEW DAY

    "STAND"

This year, STAND, the Clague recycling team, will continue to recycle in the cafeteria.  Every day after lunch, STAND volunteers sort recyclable items out of the trash.  You can help by rememberingto recycle items such as empty bottles and cans instead of throwing them away.  If you are a 6th or 7th grader interested in volunteering, please meet today by the cafeteria  drinking fountain when your grade goes outside after lunch.

As many of you know, STAND volunteers sort recyclables out of the trash and into the recycling bins every day after lunch.

    We Compost@Clague

There are two compost bins in the cafereria where you can put any fruit and vegetable scraps leftover from lunch.
