    COUGAR COMMUNITY CONNECTION WEEKLY UPDATE: May 29-June 2

    Dear Clague Middle School Neighbors,

    Thank you for contacting the District about the ongoing construction activities at the school. AAPS contractors continue to work diligently on the project to significantly overhaul the mechanical heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems with a new ground source heat pump (or geothermal) system at Clague, along with many other modernization efforts.

    This high performance geothermal system upgrade requires the development of a well field outside of the school building, consisting of over 100 bore holes that are nearly 500 ft deep. A similar system is being installed at Forsythe Middle School. AAPS continues to work with contractors responsible for the work to comply with the hours of operation and dB(A) levels outlined in the City of Ann Arbor municipal ordinance: Chapter 119 - Noise Control.

    The anticipated remaining exterior construction schedule* for 2022 is as follows:

    • Geothermal drilling will continue through October 2nd;
    • Non-drilling exterior fieldwork will continue through October 23rd.
    • Flushing and testing October 23rd – November 6th.

    *This schedule is subject to change due to weather or unforeseen conditions.

    At each school, AAPS is taking these steps in order to improve educational environments for students and teachers.

    In keeping with the District’s commitment to environmental sustainability, these comprehensive system upgrades can provide classrooms and academic spaces that will improve indoor environmental quality, improve student performance, and enhance teacher wellbeing

    Furthermore, AAPS works with our city partners and this system upgrade is in alignment with the City of Ann Arbor's A2Zero goals and supports electrification efforts to eliminate Scope 1 carbon emissions.

     mission

    schools to watch  Clague Middle School has recently been designated as a "School to Watch" by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform!

    To achieve Schools to Watch designation, a middle school must demonstrate that it has met the following criteria:

    1. It is academically excellent and challenges all students.

    2. It is developmentally responsive and sensitive to the unique developmental challenges of early adolescents.

    3. The school is socially equitable, democratic and fair, providing all students with high-quality teachers, resources and supports.

    4. The school has norms, structures and organizational arrangements to support and sustain its path toward excellence.

     "Clague Middle School is a wonderful place for middle grade youth to grow, learn, and explore. Students are happy and behave as learners. The climate of caring is obvious from the moment the students enter the building. Students are set-up for success with supports, prompts and encouragement. Classrooms had clear learning objectives. The building is spacious providing ample space for special needs. Minimal class time is spent dealing with discipline issues and everyone understands that there is a focus on learning." --Quote from Schools to Watch report
