Degrees and Certifications:

Alex Popkey

Born and raised in Kalamazoo, I hail from an extensive lineage of teachers. I have meandered east, and lived in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area for the better portion of 11 years. I hold a B.F.A. in Art Education from Michigan State, an M.A. in Women and Gender Studies from Eastern Michigan, and an M.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Michigan. I am very passionate about education and our beautiful, mitten state.

This is my first year at Mitchell Elementary, and my seventh teaching 5th grade. Before coming to Ann Arbor, I taught in Canton where I ran the after school Garden Club and coached 8th grade basketball. I have also taught kindergarten and 7th & 8th grade science.

When I am not teaching, I can be found with my fiancee at the Ypsilanti Farmers Market or camping near Lake Michigan. I enjoy spending my time traveling, reading, playing sports (including euchre - the ultimate Michigan sport), or dancing. My very favorite thing to do is spend time with family and friends, exchanging stories and laughter.
