Ms. Alberta Britton, Interim Principal
Ms. Alberta Britton as the Interim Principal of Tappan Middle School for the school year, 2021-2022.
Ms. Britton served in the Ann Arbor Public Schools for 11 years as Assistant Principal at Skyline High School before retiring in 2019. Since then, Ms. Britton has returned to fill several key interim administrator roles within the district to support successful transitions in school leadership.
Ms. Britton began her career in education as an Informational Technology Instructor for grades 9 -12 at Cranbrook Horizon Upward-Bound in West Bloomfield, Michigan. Later, she taught courses in Computer Applications and Programming Languages for grades 6-8 at Cleveland Middle School, as well as serving as Curriculum Leader. For the next 28 years, Alberta served in the Detroit Public Schools as Golightly Career and Technical Center Program Manager/Curriculum Leader, John J. Pershing High School Assistant Principal and Crockett Technical High School Assistant Principal.
Highlights from her leadership include: ensuring every student has an opportunity to learn without challenges to curriculum or biases, working closely with parent and community organizations to promote student success, and implementing after-school programs in robotics/manufacturing in collaboration with automotive manufacturers. Alberta received a Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies and Business Administration from LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee. She completed her Educational Administration preparation at Eastern Michigan University, where she also received her Master’s in Business Education.
As a highly regarded and veteran administrator in the Ann Arbor Public Schools, Ms. Britton brings a depth of leadership and experience that will serve the Tappan community well during this time of leadership transition.
Ms. Britton looks forward to beginning her service at Tappan Middle School working alongside Assistant Principal Mr. Christopher Roberts and the Tappan staff to serve the students, parents and community. The Tappan school community will also benefit from the full support of Dr. Roberta Heyward, Executive Director, Middle Level/K8 Programs.
