Mr. Peter Cunningham

Peter Cunningham graduated from the University of Toronto in 2006 with an honours Bachelor of Science in Psychology and English. Mr. Cunningham has a Masters of Teaching degree from Oakland University and is certified to teach secondary mathematics.

Mr. Cunningham taught at Mumford High School in Detroit from 2014-2019 before joining Huron. The majority of his time at Mumford was spent teaching Algebra I. He also taught Algebra II, and summer school Geometry. While at Mumford, Mr. Cunningham started the school’s wrestling program, the first ever in the history of the Detroit Public School League. He also helped coach the kickers for the football team.

Mr. Cunningham believes sports, extracurricular activities and clubs help a school truly become a community.

Before becoming a math teacher, Mr. Cunningham worked as a journalist, including from 2009-2014 at the Ann Arbor News/MLive. Mr. Cunningham was always torn between writing and teaching, and during his time as a sportswriter was inspired by the many teachers and coaches he wrote stories about who were making a positive impact in the community. This in part led to his decision to obtain his teaching degree through the Americorps program, Teach for America.

Mr. Cunningham lives in Ann Arbor with his wife, Katie, and two daughters, Joy and June.
