• New Principal Welcome Letter

Posted by Torian BIllings on 8/12/2022

    Dear STEAM Family,

It is my honor to serve the STEAM Community this year and beyond. I am Torian Billings, the new principal of STEAM. I am excited to lead the staff and meet all of our wonderful students and families. My primary goal is to help our students feel safe and successful at school. I will wear many hats but the well-being of our students will always drive my work.

During my career, I've had many unique and meaningful teaching and administration opportunities. My journey has taken me to Plymouth-Canton, Lansing, Inkster, and my hometown, Flint. I'm also a proud graduate of Michigan State University (Go Green!). In addition to being an educator, I'm a proud husband and father to two wonderful sons. My family is extremely important to me and I am grateful for their support.

In my new role, I look forward to continuing the rich tradition of excellence at A2 STEAM. I know that I'm inheriting a talented and unique school with exceptional students. With the help of our wonderful staff, I will create, develop and maintain the culture of learning that has been established. Our vision at A2 STEAM involves collaborating with parents, students, and staff members to create the best learning experience possible. Above all, we will value your student as a learner and as a child. This means celebrating diversity, building social-emotional capacity, and prioritizing physical, emotional, and intellectual safety. A2 STEAM will be a school where students will come not only to learn but to be loved.

This school year will provide many opportunities to connect with you and your family. It's my hope that each of you will get to know me in your own special way. The first opportunity will be the Popsicles on the Playground event on August 25th. More information will be coming in the
near future including an introduction from our new Assistant Principal, Ms. Sayles. Please enjoy the rest of your summer. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me. I look forward to meeting you soon.

    Sincerely,
    Torian Billings

    A HEARTFELT THANK YOU

As our school year nears completion, we are finishing strong at A2 STEAM!  This week we will host field trips, field day, the Color Fun Run, 8th grade promotion, and a last day Zoom assembly.  Behind the scenes, staff will be finalizing report cards, completing evaluation paperwork, crafting class lists, and packing up their classroom.

As the year comes to a close please be sure to:

    • Remind your child to check the lost and found  (All remaining items will be donated to charity following 6/10)

    • Pick up any remaining medications from the office  (All medications will be disposed of after 6/13)

    • Return any checked-out or borrowed items

    • Complete this Climate survey from the district

    • Let the office/admin know what supports you need this summer

    • Consider giving your child funds for the BOGO book fair

This post-pandemic school year was certainly unique, challenging, and very gratifying.  Kids exhibited tremendous growth and we were so happy to have them back into the building.  Their academic and social growth would not have been possible without the hard work, support, and patience of our talented teaching staff, our resilient support staff, our industrious office professionals, and the many adults who nurture our children.  And a special note of appreciation for the vital work of Nurse Jessica, who shepherded us through this pandemic. Our exceptional PTO and supportive families buoyed the spirits of our staff throughout the year and continued to support our exceptional educational programming.  We are so grateful for this partnership. In the 2021-2022 school year we were able to reconnect with friends, teachers, PBL, and all the rich traditions of A2 STEAM @ Northside.  Thank you, all, for reconnecting with our school and restoring the community that we’ve grown together.  Most especially, we thank you for the opportunity to share in the lives of your wonderful children!

    BOGO BOOK FAIR THIS WEEK!

This in-person fair will take place during students' regular library times. Students should come to school with cash in an envelope, marked with their name and classroom/advisory teacher's name OR funds added to their digital e-Wallet. If you're unsure which day your student has library, it's also listed on the book fair volunteer sign-up.   Speaking of which - we still need volunteers! We'd love to see you there.

    Middle School Summer Challenge

We want to invite your current fifth, sixth, or seventh grader to join our Middle School Summer Challenge. The AAPS Middle School Summer Challenge is a three-week, interdisciplinary series of design challenges specifically written for AAPS students, and runs Monday - Thursday, July 11 - July 28. We want to invite you to enroll your middle schooler to participate in this year's middle school program.

    Summer Enrichment in the AAPS

Registration is open now for Rec & Ed Summer Enrichment Camps. We’re inviting campers to have fun, form friendships, find new talents and gain confidence with a summer they won’t forget. The possibilities are endless, with art, science, music, chess, robotics, drama, sports and many other types of camps available. Summer Camp 2022 will be in-person, and the AAPS COVID-19 Health and Safety protocols will be followed. Call Rec & Ed for details on scholarships.

     COVID NOTIFICATION UPDATES FROM AAPS

As we near the end of the school year, student and staff cases of COVID remain high across all of our schools and our county. Thus, our safety guidelines remain in place, specifically masking while indoors.

In addition, our protocols for reporting student cases are being modified as follows:

    1. Parents/guardians shall* now report their student’s case directly to the district using this form: bit.ly/AAPSCaseReport. Reporting your student’s case promptly helps our AAPS COVID Response Team prevent the spread of COVID in our schools.

*For families needing assistance with reporting, please contact XXXXXXX.

    1. The school-wide notification of COVID cases will now be sent to school communities once per week, instead of daily (when there are cases), on Fridays, beginning the week of May 16. Classroom and outbreak notifications will continue to be sent as often as needed.

    APISA/A

In celebration of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month,  AAPS and APISA/A Parent Advisory Group hosted a Zoom poetry workshop led by Carlina Duan. Duan is a writer-educator from Michigan and an AAPS graduate. She is the author of the poetry collections I Wore My Blackest Hair and Alien Miss, and a recipient of a Fulbright grant and the Edna Meudt Memorial Award. Duan is currently a doctoral student in the University of Michigan’s Joint Program in English and Education, where she studies community-engaged writing and documentary poetics. If you missed the workshop on May 4 that centered around themes of home, joy, and community, you can still participate!

Watch the recording of the workshop from May 4 and/or review the poems and writing prompts here https://tinyurl.com/APISAApoetry2022. Write a poem, or a "word doodle" as Carlina calls it, that centers around the themes of home, joy, and community. By Friday, May 20, add your writing (or an excerpt of it) to this form: https://tinyurl.com/APISAA-poem. Carlina will work to create a collaborative, crowd-sourced poem from the submissions. Students who submit work will also be invited to contribute a recorded video to help create a mash-up video of the poem, as well.

     SORA MESSAGE FROM AAPS

Beginning in the fall of 2020, the AAPS has provided all students with access to a carefully curated digital library called Sora.  We recently became aware of an error that resulted in elementary and middle school students having access to materials that should have been exclusively available to high school students. We deeply apologize for this error.  Please know that we take the safety of our students very seriously and we acted immediately to remove titles from any borrowers and have put additional layers of safety controls in place to prevent this from ever happening again.

While a relatively low number of students actually checked out these materials, we are sharing this information with all of our AAPS elementary and middle school families.  We strongly encourage each family to take full advantage of parent/guardian access to SORA.  Click HERE for step-by-step instructions to using SORA as well as an FAQ about Sora HERE.  If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to your principal or school librarian.

It's our first in-person, all-school event in over 2 years!

Come join the fun on the back playground at A2 STEAM.  We'll have ice cream available, Ray's Red Hots will be there with lots of options for dinner or you are welcome to bring a picnic.  Plus, we'll have lots of activities including a Leslie Science Center booth.  Bring the whole family for Musical Cupcakes, Big Bubbles, Dunk Bucket (which of your favorite teachers will be there?) and more!

Tickets will cost $1.  Every STEAM student gets 1 free ticket.  A scoop of ice cream and Musical Cupcakes cost 1 ticket, and the Dunk Bucket is 2 tickets.  No charge for any of the other activities.

To make this happen, we need lots of volunteers. We welcome activity volunteers aged 14 and up - especially STEAM alums!  Younger kids can volunteer with their parents.  Every volunteer shift earns 1 free ticket.  Sign up here:

    PICNIC POPS

Picnic Pops is back this year! May 22nd from 12-6PM.  This year we will enjoy a (hopefully) sunny day listening to the music of our talented community bands. Families are invited to listen to the music, play carnival style games, and enjoy local food trucks all on the pioneer lawn. The concert is free and carnival games will be reasonably priced with tickets available for cash purchases on site. We are looking forward to a day of fun and music and hope to see everyone there! Please see this flyer for more information!

    GUEST PRESENTER/EQUITY- DR. SEALEY-RUIZ

We are excited to share that the Ann Arbor Public Schools is hosting a community meeting on equity with Dr. Sealey Ruiz on Tuesday, May 3rd, from 6:00-7:30 PM.

Equity is Everything: History, Humanity, and Healing in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. The meetings are designed to share with the community more about the equity work going on in the AAPS and to develop an understanding of the shared language in the work among AAPS staff during the prior two school years. These sessions will serve as a springboard for convening a community Equity Advisory Group. More information will be coming on next steps this spring.  You can join the zoom webinar on Tuesday, May 3rd at 6 PM here.

ROLL OR STROLL TO SCHOOL - Wednesday, May 4th

Our semi-annual walk or bike to school day returns!  Students are encouraged to use any non-motorized transportation to get to school, or perhaps take public transportation (if convenient) instead of arriving in a private vehicle.  Students on our school bus routes will be dropped at Bethel AME Church on John A. Woods Dr. and will then walk the block to school.  Students and families can then join us on the plaza in the back, outside the MPR for a bagel and/or a banana.  Volunteers needed to help deliver the bagels, help students with securing bikes at STEAM,  help with passing out bagels, setting up and cleaning up.  https://bit.ly/SteamROLL2022

Or use your phone to scan this handy QR code!

Should your student need bike lights or a bike lock, please contact Aimee Bednar at aimee.bednar@gmail.com.

     A MESSAGE FROM OUR LIBRARY

The AAPS elementary libraries all participated in voting for this year's Great Lakes Great Books award (a student chosen award recognizing a highly engaging book for kids). Our district selected See the Cat by David LaRochelle as our K-2 winner and Donut Feed the Squirrels by Mika Song as our 3-5 grade winner. Both authors were brought in for virtual author visits, which the students really enjoyed.

In addition, Mika Song proposed a contest for us to guess the title of her newest publication (still in progress). The hints were that it was two words, starting with the letters "F" and "C" and that it was something sweet. We guessed "fruit cake", and although it wasn't correct, Mika sent us a drawing of her characters eating a fruit cake!

The students (particularly 3rd-5th grade) are thrilled that our A2 STEAM library now features an original work of art by Mika Song:

*ABSOLUTELY NO DROPPING OFF ON BARTON DRIVE, THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS FOR YOUR CHILD(REN), we do not want to see ANYONE get hit by a car.

    FROM THE LIBRARY
    Dear STEAM Families,

First, I'd like to thank the PTO for purchasing our 10 "top secret" books to celebrate March is Reading Month. Students really enjoyed finding the books, reading them to classes, and re-hiding them for other classes to find.

Thank you also STEAM families, for your support throughout the year with reading, your donations of books from Booksweet, and purchases from Scholastic have helped us stock the library with new, fresh titles! Also, we will be having a BOGO Scholastic book fair during the last week of school.

Finally, here is the newest edition of the district library newsletter: March/April 2022 AAPS Library Department Newsletter

This includes information about district MIRM celebrations and an interview with a librarian.

    Warm regards,
    Julie Darling, A2 STEAM librarian

    M-STEP INFORMATION, GRADES 3-8 ONLY

If your child in is grades 3 - 8, please read this district letter about M-STEP testing that will soon commence.

    AAPS LITERACY TIPS

This Spring K-3 Literacy Calendar provides reading suggestions for the months of April and May.

    DROP-OFF REMINDERS

Please be safe and kind to one another during morning drop-off.  Northside Church and Hiawatha Dr. are over-utilized so I implore families to try dropping off at Bethel AME Church or a local street like Traver.  Please refer to this map for parking locations.

(Backstory: When A2 STEAM grew from less than 200 students to over 600 students, the traffic logistics were studied extensively by the school district, city traffic engineers, and a robust Safe Routes to School committee.  Unfortunately, there is no perfect solution to the drop-off/pick-up woes.  We need to keep parking lots clear for the safety of our students so that the buses can quickly load/unload, and so our 50+ staff members have a place to park.  A drop-off loop is not feasible.)

    MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH TESTING OUT

Please complete this form by April 1st (or today!) so we can begin to plan for the 2022-2023 school year. Thank you!
