Mrs. Rachel Toon
Rachel Toon was born and raised in Michigan—both in Taylor (a downriver Detroit community) and in West Branch (north of Saginaw), and came to Ann Arbor for her bachelor’s degree at U of M—and stayed to raise her family here. She has three children: Gabrielle is 24 and very passionate about Asian studies and linguistics; Tenzin is 13 and will be in eighth grade at Ann Arbor Open School; and Miguel is eight and is at joining us at STEAM in third grade. Ms. Toon is no stranger to blended families, single parenting, and other non-traditional ways people make a family work.
Other than education, which she is obviously very passionate about, Ms. Toon’s passion is theater. She is a company member of the Brass Tacks Ensemble and enjoys acting-- especially classical theater. Ms. Toon is very dramatic, which the kids find engaging, but is loud by nature— students who prefer quieter voices are allowed to ask her to “turn down the volume.” All that voice projection training in the theater goes a long way!
Ms. Toon taught for four years in Detroit Public Schools, then seven years each at Ann Arbor Open School and Bryant Elementary divided by her taking an educational leave in 2010-2011 to get her Masters of Education at Harvard University. In her twenty years of classroom teaching, she has taught every grade from K through 8th. She is thrilled to be back with middle school-aged people, which is her favorite age to work with due to her intense passion for social justice curriculum.
