Mr. Salvador Barrientes

Ann Arbor Huron Community,

My name is Salvador Barrientes Jr. I am your 9th Grade Dean and it is an honor to be part of this International Baccalaureate Administrative team.

The following is a narrative for you to get to know your Dean a little better.

Originally from Saginaw, Michigan, I enlisted in the armed forces in January 1998. I was honorably discharged in November 2005. During the final years of my enlistment and shortly after my discharge, I earned my B.A. with teaching certification from Eastern Michigan University. After teaching for a couple of years in various communities from Southwest Detroit to Belleville, I went on to earn my M.A. from Eastern Michigan University. After more than 13 years in the classroom, I continued my formal education by earning my K-12 Administrator Certification in January 2019.

I join the Huron community as a master teacher with many years of combined leadership, teaching, coaching, and administrative experiences. My leadership roles include earning the rank of Staff Sergeant of Marines within my six years of service, serving as the Athletics and Co-Curricular Director, Lead Administrator for the Summer Learning Institute, the Department Chair for the Literature and Language department. Additionally, I’ve actively mentored numerous graduate and undergraduate interns from the University of Michigan, School of Education.  I’ve most recently served as an SLC Principal at Skyline High School where I was charged with leading the small learning communities of Academic Innovation and Equality.

In our personal time, my wonderful wife, Dr. Margarita Banda Barrientes, our four children and our dog, Dexter, enjoy visiting extended family in our hometown of Saginaw and in Texas. Additionally, we love heading “up north” for our annual camping events.

My children have all attended Ann Arbor Public Schools following the Mitchell, Scarlett and Huron pathway.  We are a proud Mustang, RoadRunner and River Rat family.

A lifetime of leadership roles, including sports management, educational administration, and the armed forces, have provided me the discipline, balance, integrity, and vision to continue my work with this community as the 9th Grade Dean at Huron High School.

I look forward to working with the entire Huron community.
