• Dear Families,


    Welcome to both new and returning families!  I am so excited to be starting a new year at Ann Arbor Open, and am working hard to get our room ready for the new school year.  This is my 12th year here, and I have an incoming 8th grader, as well as my adult son and daughter out working in the world!


    I am looking forward to seeing you all on the first day of school, Monday, August 28, 2023.  Please note our bell schedule for this year is the same – the first bell will ring at 8:10 and then all students are expected to be in the classroom by 8:15. The school day will end at 3:18 each day.   Please have your students enter the classroom through our outside door.  It is marked above as #5.  


    It is very important that I have after school plans for every child in writing.  Please email me with the after-school instructions prior to the first day of school.  The transportation cards will be sent home the first day of school, but please make sure I know the plans for that first day.  If your child will be picked up, please note if they will be met at the classroom or should come out to the parking lot.  For bus riders I will need the bus number.  If your child goes different places on certain days it can be helpful to have another copy of this schedule in your child’s backpack.  Please be sure your student has a labeled water bottle – our water fountain is set up to refill bottles, rather than drinking directly from it.


    Your child should bring lunch to school or plan on ordering a school hot lunch beginning the first day. I would recommend packing a healthy snack for your student each day.  We will be asking for snack donations for our class, but until we build up a supply I would suggest sending individual snacks.


    The majority of the classroom information will be shared via our secure Bloomz site.  Please send me any email address(es) you would like added – I will send email invitations to join our Bloomz community.  It is a secure site, so only those individuals who have been invited can see the information on it.  This is where class notifications, events, and important information will be added.  Additionally, we will have a class e-mail list which I will use for quick notes or individual emails. Please take a moment to send me an email with the email address(es) you would like to have included.  If you have other family members/caregivers to add to our class list please send that information to me in a message as well at: thomasjen@aaps.k12.mi.us.  If there is any other information you would like to share about your student, such as nicknames or any helpful tips, please share that as well.


    Please mark your calendar for Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 14..  That evening is a time for you to learn what to expect from the coming year, how our classroom operates and to ask any general school/classroom questions that you may have.  There will be more details forthcoming about the format of that evening.
