    Fall Soccer 2024 News

As we did in the the past  few years, parents have two options for registering their child(ren) for soccer.
    • First, our traditional leagues are named "Girls-Open" and "Boys-Open." These leagues aim to retain some gender-specificity while being open to all.
    • Second, after the success of the league in the spring , Rec & Ed is again running the Sunday All Gender League. This league is for children seeking a soccer team experience with no specific gender affiliation. Teams will be formed into grade groups (Y5-1st, 2nd-3rd, and 4th-5th graders), with a minimum of 40 or 48 participants per grade group. Teams will practice once a week, with all games scheduled on Sundays at 12:00 noon or later. Practice time and location will be set by the coach and those practices are during the week like the other leagues.

Statement of Inclusion for Rec & Ed Youth Sports
Rec & Ed is committed to providing safe and inclusive recreational sports opportunities to all young people, regardless of race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, national origin, ability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. Youth may register using a variety of gender terms, including “non-binary,” and are welcome to select whichever sports and leagues they prefer.

We welcome young people who identify as non-binary or gender-fluid to play on Rec & Ed teams! Parents, feel free to contact Seth Dodson (dodsons@a2schools.org) to ensure we have correct pronouns for their children and to discuss any other ways we can provide children with a welcoming environment.

About the Youth Soccer League Program

Kids develop their social and mental skills, physical strength, and character while learning how to play soccer. Teamwork and active participation are key components. Every child plays as there are no tryouts or cuts. Fall Soccer is open to children who are in Y5 - 8th grade in the 2024-2025 school year. The season will run for 6–7 weeks with practices starting the week of August 26th and games the weekend of September 7th/8th. Games are played on Saturday/Sunday only. The games will run no later than October 26th/27th.

We will provide a safe outdoor recreational environment where students are able to see their friends, meet new friends and learn soccer from volunteers in our community. Our most important goal this spring is that we want the kids to have fun and be active safely.

Willie Pickvet  pickvetw@a2schools.org and Theda Joffe joffet@a2schools.org are the main contacts for the league. If you are interested in refereeing, please reach out to Rick Mull at mullr@a2schools.org.

Young 5's/Kindergarten Open - 10 players per team.
1st Grade Open teams - 10 players per team.
2nd grade/MS Grade Open teams: 12 players per team.

Again this fall, Rec & Ed is running the All Gender League. This league is for children seeking soccer team experience with no specific gender affiliation. Teams will be formed into grade groups (Y5-1st, 2nd-3rd, and 4th-5th graders), with a minimum of 40 to 48 participants per grade group. Teams will practice once/week, with all games scheduled on Sundays at 12:00 noon or later. Practice time and location will be set by the coach.  Practices are during the week.

    Practices and Games
Each team will practice one evening during the week, at either 5:00PM or 6:00PM. Usually practices are held at one of the Ann Arbor district’s elementary schools or a neighborhood park. Practice locations and days are selected by the Head Coach.

Practices begin the week of August 26th.

The games begin the week of September 7th. Most games are scheduled on Saturdays, between 8AM and 6PM, at area parks or schools. A limited number of games may be played on Sunday afternoons. You will receive a schedule of games and locations from your head coach.

    Team Formation
Players will be notified of their team assignment via phone from the head coach. Players who have not heard from a coach should contact the Red&Ed office for Theda at joffet@a2schools.org or Willie at pickvetw@a2schools.org.

Participants are assigned to school teams based on their public school attendance areas. Consult Youth Player Placement for detailed information.

If two teams are formed for the same grade from the same school, coaches and Rec & Ed staff will assign players to teams in accordance with departmental guidelines to ensure equally-balanced teams.

    Combo Teams
If more than ten players from the same grade and school register, participants may be assigned to teams with participants from different attendance areas. It is not rare for “combo” teams, or teams with participants from two or more different schools to be formed. If your child’s school has filled its primary team roster, a combo team will be formed. Players whose registrations are received during the priority registration period are placed in the primary school team first.

You may indicate when you register if you want your child to "play up" a grade.

Charter, Parochial, Private, and Out-of-District Public Schools
Charter, parochial, private, and out-of-district public school teams can be formed if all grade requirements are satisfied and registration deadlines met. Registration must be open for all students that attend these schools.  We require a minimum of seven players to be registered for a team to be formed.

    Coaches
Teams are coached and assisted by volunteers, many of whom are parents. Coaches and team parents are always needed!  If you would like to volunteer, please fill out the Fall volunteer coaches information form or fill out the volunteer question when registering online or the Adult Volunteer section of the paper registration form.

    Uniforms
Participants receive a team t-shirt which must be worn at all games. Players must wear shin guards under their socks. Shorts, athletic shoes, and socks are standard team uniforms. Indicate your child’s t-shirt size when you register. During games and practices, all jewelry, such as rings, watches, bracelets (including friendship), earrings of any kind (including starters), chains or necklaces are illegal. Any player who fails to remove his or her jewelry may not participate until it is removed.
