I am very excited about the opportunity to be a part of your child’s educational experience. You have been your child’s first teacher. As your child continues to grow and develop, I look forward to working together with you this school year. In order to make this a successful year, I wanted to share some important classroom information with you. Please refer to this information during the year, as needed. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Your child should bring a backpack/tote bag EVERY DAY to school. There will be notes, artwork, library books, papers, etc. that will be coming home. The bag should be large enough to hold all of your child’s things including items like boots and snow pants in the winter. Boots and snow pants are required to play in the snow during recess.
Please be sure to put your child’s name on all items brought from home including lunches, jackets and backpacks. Many children have identical items, and this makes it easier to identify lost articles.
SNACKS AND SUPPLIES
We will have a time set aside for a snack each morning. However, due to many families' dietary and religious restrictions and preferences regarding food, I am asking that you provide an appropriate snack for your own child each day, if you feel your child needs a snack. No whole-group snacks will be provided this year. If you would like to send in snack for the entire group, please send fruits or vegetables.
The district has designated Bryant School as a NO PEANUT/NO TREE NUT school. This means that we must use extra caution in serving food items at school. Please help us by checking the ingredient list of food items before sending them to school, including both snack items and those you send in your child’s lunch.
We will need napkins and hand sanitizer for snack. Your child may also bring in a water bottle. This bottle should only contain water. The bottle will mainly be used during snack time, but it is also great on a hot day.
Clorox Antibacterial wipes work great for sanitizing the tables between snacks. Please send in a container of these when you can. If you would like to donate other items for the classroom, we can always use tissues, napkins, hand sanitizer, table wipes, gallon size plastic baggies, or playdough. I will let you know when we are in need of more supplies. Thank you.
Birthdays are very special for kindergartners. If you would like to send in a special treat, please let me know at least one day in advance. Any food treats must be fruits or vegetables ONLY. Ms. Heyward has asked that we have NO cookies, cupcakes or cakes of any kind. Pencils, erasers or other small trinkets are good choices. Please note that when you are having birthday parties outside of school and only invite some of your child’s classmates, children not invited may be very upset. For this reason birthday invitations can only be passed out in class if all the students are receiving an invite.
Also, please let me know if your child does not celebrate birthdays or has dietary restrictions.
ITEMS FROM HOME
It is best that toys from home do not come to school. They usually cause sharing problems and/or become lost or broken. If items are brought to school, they will have to remain in the backpack. Your child may bring in something special to share with the class (souvenirs from a vacation, a leaf from a walk, or items related to a current theme). If possible, please send in a note with the item so that I can help your child explain it to the class. NO WEAPONS AT ANY TIME INCLUDING TOY GUNS.
ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL
School starts at 8:44 a.m. If a child arrives early he/she should go directly to the multipurpose room until the bell rings. There are supervisors who will watch those children eating breakfast and also the students who have arrived early.
School is dismissed at 3:50 p.m. Children being picked up by parents will be outside or in the gym, depending on weather. There will be adult supervisors assigned there until parents arrive. You will need to pick your child up at the designated location. I will take children riding buses directly to their bus. Children attending Bryant’s afternoon childcare program are taken to the assigned classroom or picked up outside of our classroom by day care personnel.
If someone other than a parent is picking up your child, PLEASE WRITE ME A NOTE. If at any time your child’s regular destination changes, please write me a note or call the office before 11:00 a.m. WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CHANGE YOUR CHILD’S REGULAR DESTINATION WITHOUT A NOTE OR A CALL FROM YOU.
GYM SHOES/SPECIAL CLASSES
Your child must wear rubber-soled shoes for gym class, since the gym floor can be quite slippery for regular shoes.
Every Friday, unless there is no school or something unexpected comes up, there will be a Friday Folder sent home with your child. The weekly newsletter will be in this folder for the first month (then it will be emailed to you.) It will let you know about class themes, projects, field trips, etc. Homework, book orders and permissions slips will also be in the folder, along with any notes from the office. Please sign the folder insert and return the homework. Homework will be due on the following Wednesday.
Book order forms will be sent home periodically depending on interest. If you would like to order books for your child, please send a check payable to Scholastic or order online. Make sure to put your child’s name on the envelope and book order form. This is a great way to get books at a reduced price and help build the classroom’s library.
Report cards are sent home three times during the school year; November, March, and the last day of school in June.
Parent/Teacher Conferences are held in the fall. There is also one evening conference night in the spring for conferences that parents or teachers feel are necessary. Please plan to come to Curriculum Night. You will be able to see the classroom and sign up for fall conferences. We will also be sharing the Kindergarten Curriculum. More information on Curriculum Night to come.
