Famous Faces 01b Can you name these famous people?
Famous Faces 02a Can you name these famous people?Reading and Writing in History When reading for a History class, one often encounters “TMI” - too much information. The wise student asks, "But how do I know which information is important, and which information I can ignore?" Too many names, too many specific details. How does a student know what's important? Here are some hints: (1) ignore overly specific information; (2) use later parts of the text to help you determine which information in earlier parts of the text are important; (3) mark important parts of the text for later reference; (4) know your purpose in reading - why are you reading this? What are you trying to discover or find out?
When writing for a history class, begin with data. You want to write data-rich, or information-rich, paragraphs, which include specifics, not generalizations: names of people, names of places, names of events, and dates. Use numbers and proper nouns. Then go on to talk about more conceptual things, like causes and motives.
Examples: for the Battle of Tours and Poitiers, it's enough to know the year, 752 A.D. - you don't need to know the month or day. But for the attack on Pearl Harbor, you want not only to know that it was in 1941, but that it was on a Sunday, December 7th. You can also indicate a date by referring to other events. For example, if you forgot when President Kennedy was in office, you could refer to his administration as being after World War II but before the moon landing.
