Hello Mitchell Community!
Art and education are something I have been passionate about since I can remember. I decided I wanted to be an art teacher when I took my first sculpture class in high school. The excitement I got when creating and viewing art was something I wanted to share with others. My family lives in Kalamazoo, MI where I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education from Western Michigan University. That first sculpture class I took was at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, where I continued my career as a ceramics artist throughout my time there.
Since leaving Kalamazoo I have worked in schools in Detroit, Pontiac, and Berkley until finding my home here at Mitchell. Although my husband and I miss the Detroit area, we are very excited to have found our first home together in Ypsilanti. Outside of school I continue to work as a ceramic artist, painter, and drawer. In past summers I have taught and created ceramics at Pewabic Pottery in Detroit and am looking forward to continuing my career as an artist in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. When I am not teaching or creating I enjoy being outside, camping, cooking, seeing live music, and spending time with friends and family.
Our art room at Mitchell is a Teaching for Artistic Behavior, or TAB, classroom. TAB art rooms leave creative control of art projects up to the students who are the artists. The teacher’s role is to bring knowledge of supplies, resources, and techniques to the classroom and guide students in creating their own personal portfolios. My favorite part of my job is seeing all the amazing talents and ideas our students bring to life in the art room! If you would like to see some of our creations and be updated with art news follow me on Twitter at @a2MitchellArt.
