In-District Transfers for AAPS Residents

The Ann Arbor Board of Education has approved a policy that allows a permanent school reassignment for approved students from their assigned school to one that has been identified as having space available. This is determined annually based upon each school’s capacity and projected enrollment. When students are approved, they are able to stay for all years offered at that school.

We are no longer accepting IDT applications for the 2025-26 school year.

For the 2026-27 academic year, we will accept in-district transfer applications
for grades Young 5s / Kindergarten - 10th grades
and 11th grade (Huron - IB only)  from March 3, 2026 - March 31, 2026.

Apply for the 2026-27 Academic Year

Important Considerations

  • Transportation is the responsibility of the parent/guardian and not provided by AAPS.
  • Applications are only accepted during the application window timeframes.
  • Applications are not processed on a first-come, first-served basis. In each application window, priority is given to:
    • Students who live in the school's attendance area;
    • Siblings of currently enrolled transfer students who will attend the same school in the enrolling year;
    • Resident in-district transfers.
  • In the event that the number of applications exceeds available space, we conduct a lottery of eligible applicants. A waiting list will be maintained for the remaining applications and prioritized through the random draw.
  • Students are not automatically moved to the next neighborhood building or “feeder” school. A new in-district transfer application is necessary.
  • Students applying to attend the same school as a sibling have placement priority provided that the currently enrolled sibling will attend the same school in the enrolling year.
  • High school students who transfer may be subject to an ineligibility period per MHSAA policy. Please contact the athletic director of the approved school with questions.

Space Available Transportation

In an effort to increase access and opportunity for all students, students may ride District school buses from a regularly established and scheduled bus stop on a "Space Available Basis." This service is available to those students that live in the Ann Arbor Public Schools' attendance area, but do not live in the school's transportation area or a School of Choice student. Families interested in Space Available Transportation must apply through the District and abide by all regulations, rules and guidelines set forth under this policy. Applications will be reviewed in early October after student counts are completed. More information and application here.
