AAPS Required School Safety Drills
As required by the Michigan Public Act 12 of 2014, the Ann Arbor Public Schools is required to run a series of safety drills during the school year. The drill dates are coordinated with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Emergency Services Division and the City of Ann Ann Arbor Office of Emergency Management.
AAPS uses grade level, age appropriate instructions to conduct the drills providing classroom teachers specific drill scenarios for their use.
Additionally AAPS uses the Raptor Drill Manager to conduct all drills as well as using the tool in the event of a real school emergency.
The State of Michigan school safety drill requirements:
- Fire Drills - Minimum of 5
- Severe Weather-Tornado Drills - Minimum of 2
- School Security Drills – Minimum of 3
1 School Security Drill needs to occur during lunch, recess or class passing time.
Additional AAPS Drill not required by the State of Michigan
- Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) - 2 Drills
Each AAPS school has a MERT team which is a trained group of volunteer staff that provides immediate, on-site, first-aid and life-saving care (CPR/AED/bleeding control) during medical emergencies.
All school drills are required to be posted on the AAPS website with a link on each school’s website.
Schools must report after the completion of a drill to the AAPS Executive Director of School Safety and the City of Ann Arbor Emergency Manager via email.
