Angell, Burns Park and Community Indoor Air Quality

Indoor Air Quality at Angell Elementary, Burns Park Elementary, and Community High School

The health and safety of our students, staff and community remain a top priority in the Ann Arbor Public Schools.

During both the planning and the summer construction phases of the renovation projects at Angell Elementary, Burns Park Elementary, and Community High School, the AAPS team worked closely with environmental consultants. To ensure adherence to all requirements, the AAPS provided certified oversight of environmental contractors throughout each step of the process as well as testing during their work process and air and dust sampling.

AAPS completed appropriate testing, discovered areas where some asbestos- containing materials existed and addressed these areas according to applicable OSHA and EPA requirements as overseen by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, EGLE. The procedures include containment, abatement, continuous air monitoring as well as final clean-up dust sampling.

Angell, Burns Park, and Community were cleared for re-occupancy by the environmental professionals during the course of the remediation process over the summer.

In an abundance of caution, during this week, additional follow-up bulk dust samples are being collected at these school locations and analyzed by an accredited laboratory. Also, air samples are being collected and analyzed at these school locations by the district’s environmental consulting firm.

Friday, August 27th Update:

Burns Park Elementary

Air samples and bulk dust samples have been analyzed for Burns Park Elementary. The district has received the final reports, and all levels were again determined to be safe for re-occupancy.

Similarly, additional dust and air samples are being collected at Angell Elementary and Community High School on the evening of Friday, August 27, 2021, and results will be expedited over the weekend and shared with the community.

Saturday, August 28th Update:

Angell Elementary

Additional air samples and bulk dust samples have been analyzed for Angell Elementary. The district received the reports on Saturday, August 28th, and all levels were again determined to be safe for re-occupancy.

Community High School

Additional air samples and bulk dust samples have been analyzed for Community High School. The district received the reports on Saturday, August 28th, and all levels were again determined to be safe for re-occupancy.
