Does my student qualify for a bus?

Students qualify for AAPS bus transportation if they live:

• 1.25 miles or more from school - elementary students
• 1.5 miles or more from school - K-8, middle and high school students

Safety busing: If the walking path is unsafe (for example, no sidewalks), your student may qualify even if you live closer. All walk and bike routes are reviewed for safety by AAPS Transportation staff, the Ann Arbor Police and City of Ann Arbor Traffic Engineers.

At the bus stop

• Your student may walk up to 1/2 mile to reach their stop. Most stops are a few blocks from home.
• Be at the stop at least 5 minutes before the posted arrival time.
• Buses will not wait. If your student isn't there when the bus arrives, it will keep going.
• Young 5s and Kindergarten: an approved adult must meet your child at the stop at the end of the school day.

Routes and schedules

• Routes and schedules are posted here in mid-August each year.
• Your student's school will also send route and schedule information before school starts.
• Please be patient the first few weeks as riders and routes settle.

Track the bus - Versatrans My Stop app (free)

• Download free from any app store to plan for on-time or late arrivals and avoid missed pickups.
• Login: your student's Student ID. Password: your Family ID (your school provides both).
• The Family ID is the same for all students in your family. If your children ride different routes, you can toggle between them in teh app.
• Note: there is a 1-2 minute GPS lag, and the bus won't appear until it has left the garage. Start checking about 20 minutes before arrival.

Bus safety rules

• Stay seated at all times.
• Sit in your assigned seat (many schools assign seats after the first few weeks).
• Keep the aisle clear - no legs or belongings in the aisle.
• Keep hands and belongings inside the bus; do not throw anything from the windows.
• Use your inside voice.
• No bullying.
• No eating or drinking.

Other ways students ride

High schoolers - AAATA public bus passes

High school students who live outside the 1.5-mile walk zone and within the AAATA service area receive a public bus pass, good for two rides a day to and from school. Pick up your pass during high school registration, where AAATA representatives will help with routing.

Space Available busing - In-District Transfer and Schools of Choice

These placements do not include transportation, but you can apply for an open seat on the nearest existing route after the first fall ridership counts.

• Apply online, then watch for a decision by mid-October.
• AAPS does not add new stops or routes. Getting your student to and from the nearest stop is up to you.
• Wait for approval to ride. Students who board before approval will have their parent/guardian contacted and won't be allowed to ride until approved.

Student "Guest" Bus Riders

AAPS does not allow students to be "guest" riders on bus routes due to safety and space concerns. 

 

If a family faces a same-day emergency, as confirmed by the principal, and there is room on the bus, the principal may approve the ride for emergency purposes only. An emergency does not include a play date, study groups or childcare need. The principal may consult with the Executive Director of Student Safety and District Operations when they receive the emergency request. Transportation will be contacted of this emergency need.

Durham Transportation is accepting applications for bus drivers and assistants

• Starting Pay: Driver: $26.50 per hour - guaranteed 6 hours per day. Monitor: $18.27 per hour - guaranteed 6 hours per day.
