NWEA Assessment System

Dear Parents and Guardians,
During the beginning weeks of the school year, your student was assessed according to State requirements in both mathematics and reading. The MAP assessment was given to all students in grades K-8 in the areas of reading and mathematics. MAP assessments are adaptive and adjust to the individual responses of each student. When your child correctly or incorrectly answers a question, the next question will be more or less challenging depending on the previous answer.
Following this correspondence, you will receive:
- Results of your child’s performance on the NWEA MAP reading assessment
- Results of your child’s performance on the NWEA MAP math assessment.
As we continue to progress through the school year, it is important to share that these assessment results are just two of the indicators that help teachers know what your child needs. In addition, teachers watch student performance during lessons and use information from what is turned in, taking note of areas of achievement as well as need. All of this information comes together to form a profile of achievement teachers use to guide the next steps in your child’s instruction.
It may also be important to know the results of these tests do not affect grades.
When you examine the MAP Student Progress Report, you will note that your child’s MAP results are reported in RIT scores. The RIT score is an equal-interval scale, like feet and inches, and shows a continuum of progress across grade levels. As a result, we can easily measure growth in learning.
Your child’s fall MAP scores should be viewed as a snapshot and remember that this is only one measure of your child’s academic progress.
