Mrs. Alston
Greetings Pittsfield CommUNITY,
I am SO elated to join the Pittsfield staff and community, as the newest Penguin! Eagerly, I await to meet each and every one of you over the next couple of weeks. We will joyfully engage together to make this an extraordinary 2019-2020 school year.
I’ve been an educator for eighteen years. I am passionate about educating the whole child, equitably preparing our students to be leaders in learning in our commUNITY, and strengthening our world. I’m a firm believer that “The strength of the team is each individual member, the strength of each member is the team," eloquently said by Phil Jackson. Enthusiastically, I look forward to listening, learning and growing with each and every one of you.
Leading up to becoming a Penguin, I worked at Bryant and Pattengill schools for six years. This past year, I had the opportunity to lead the re-envisioning of the super-pair school. While I was fully committed and grateful to lead this process, I truly missed the day to day interpersonal connections that are authentically forged between students, staff, families and the community.
Prior to my time with Ann Arbor Public Schools, I worked at a K-8 charter school in Detroit, Michigan. There, I began my tenure as a teacher, then as a math instructional facilitator. After, I became the Assistant Principal for two years, and served as the Principal for five years. Additionally, my educational journey has allowed me the opportunity to teach elementary and middle school within the Detroit Public School system; and fourth grade with Chicago Public Schools.
I’m a WOLVERINE at heart! I graduated from the University of Michigan School of Education where I received my undergraduate degree. After, I attended Wayne State University and received a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership.
Outside of school, I am a proud wife and mother of two boys, ages 7 and 9. In our free time, we enjoy reading books, riding bicycles, watching movies, traveling and enjoying our time together. We were able to do all of these fun activities over the summer vacation. I hope to hear all about your summer vacation when we meet soon.
Pure joy comes to mind when I think about our future and new beginnings. It reminds me of a quote from Meister Eckhart, “And suddenly you just know...it’s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.” I pleasurably await our new beginnings and teaming with you!
Go Penguins!
