    Mr. Heaton

    Dear Pattengill Families,

My name is John Heaton and I am so excited to be working with you and your child this year!

This will be my fourth year teaching at Pattengill.  I have taught 4th and 5th grade at Pattengill and also 6th and 7th grade ELA at Forsythe middle school.  I earned a bachelor's degree in English from Allegheny College and a Masters in Elementary Education from the University of Michigan.

Pattengill means everything to me.  My mother taught at Pattengill for 15 years, so as a child I grew up playing on the playground, helping her set up her classroom and running wild during ice cream socials.  Growing up in Ann Arbor, I attended Thurston elementary, Clague middle school and Huron high school.  I enjoy incorporating the values I see in our city such as celebrating diversity, inclusion of all people and backgrounds, and hard work into my classroom.

My teaching philosophy is to empower students to take ownership of their learning and to use their own experiences to enrich and advance their learning.  I believe the teacher, student, and parent should function as a team, and I look forward to working with you this year!

    Sincerely,
    John Heaton
