Assistant Dean Rebecca Westrate

Rebecca joined the Community High family in 2017, with 18+ years of experience in education. As a teacher, curriculum writer, Title 1 coordinator, and building principal since 2002, she brings a variety of experiences to the administrative team. In 2007, Rebecca visited Community to learn more about Forum. That experience helped frame her beliefs about the relationship between students and schools, and prompted her to patiently wait ten years for her chance to join the CHS team.

In 2012, Rebecca was named GM School Superhero for her work at Hamtramck High School. More recently, she and Dean Marci were named 2019 Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) Administrators of the Year. She believes that authentic relationships, coupled with systematic intervention, is the foundation needed to make equity a priority in our communities. Her professional passions include collaborating with teachers to enhance the amazing work they do every day.

She graduated with a B.A. in Language and Literature from Grand Valley State University and completed an M.A. in Educational Administration from University of Detroit Mercy. Rebecca has also taught and studied systems of education in South Africa and Italy.

Rebecca spends her time outside of school with her wonderful daughter “Fig,” and working with her partner in the yard. She has a goal of learning to sail but needs to learn to swim first!
