King Elementary School has been participating in a school-wide Composting program since 2008. Fifth Grade Students interested in the Composting Team have the opportunity as fourth graders to train and commit to helping the school on a weekly basis when they start fifth grade. 10 fifth graders meet monthly with fifth-grade teacher Neha Shah to help run and facilitate the program. Every classroom has a classroom compost bin to collect compostable food waste items. Classes then take the bins down daily and place waste in our biodegradable bags in the lunchroom. In the lunchroom, we also have compost bins for lunch waste. Our school PTO supports and funds our programming. Please support the King PTO.
Team Duties include:
- Meetings with Compost Team and Teacher Liason
- Sorting and Collecting Compost
- Weighing and Recording Compost Daily
- Presentations and Peer Education
We work with the City of Ann Arbor to have our compost food waste picked up weekly.
