Serving as the principal of Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School in Ann Arbor is my honor and privilege!   King is known for its community spirit and strong academics. Leading our school with a dynamic team of professionals is an amazing experience.  In our learning environment we focus on the wellness of the whole child--social, emotional and cognitive.   My educational passion is positive servant leadership.  I am a life-long learner, and I am honored to apply my learnings as your principal.

When I was a youth, Ann Arbor was my backyard; I grew up in Dexter.  After high school, I attended Michigan State University (GO GREEN!).  Thankfully, I married a University of Michigan graduate (GO BLUE!), so we balance each other out!  I've taught in three states, nine districts in 32 years!  My life has taken me many places, and I can honestly say, being an Ann Arbor educator is my dream-come-true!

My husband, Ron and I live in Novi, and we have three girls, plus a golden retriever.  Aimee is our oldest daughter, a Grand Valley State University graduate; she is employed by Deloitte as a corporate event planner in West Lake, Texas.  Amelia, our middle daughter is 25 years old, lives in Detroit, and works as a nanny.  Erin, our 25 year-old, lives in Denver, and is busy helping Amazon open new fulfillment centers.  The one who provides the most entertainment in our home is Holly, our 7-year-old golden retriever!  Holly keeps me company on all my walks, and she gets into her share of mischief!

In my five years of serving as principal, I can tell you the best part of my work is the amazing people! One critical role as the school administrator is to promote the success of all students by collaborating with staff, families and community members.  By working hand-in-hand with our King Parent Teacher Organization, we accomplish strong parent participation.

Thank you for being involved and being a member of our King family!  I encourage you to visit this site often.  Check out what's happening, and be informed.  Consider volunteering and participating. Let's work together to accomplish our goals for the sake of your child's education!  Please know that I am sincerely interested in any ideas and suggestions you may have to promote learning and partnerships.  You are welcome to stop by any time.  My door is always open!

I am thrilled to dedicate my leadership, passion, and enthusiasm to being a principal!

Yours truly,

Mary Cooper, Ed. S.
