Dear Pattengill Families,
My name is Emily Heid, and I am so excited to get to know all of you and to make music with you this school year. This will be my fifth year of teaching, and my first year with Ann Arbor Public Schools. I have previously taught in Clarkston and in Taylor Michigan, as well as in Germany. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Wayne State University and a Master’s degree in Music Education from Oakland University.
I can play over thirteen musical instruments, and I love to sing. My favorite instruments to play are the flute and ukulele. I have performed with orchestras in five countries, and was the principal flutist for the Leonberg Sinfonie Orchester in Leonberg, Germany. I am fluent in German, and lived there for two and a half years. I currently live in Livonia with my husband and cat named Blue. This fall we will also be adopting a puppy which we are very excited about! I love to do yoga, travel, read, and of course play music.
I believe that both vocal music and instrumental music are equally important, therefore, my classes involve both singing and playing an instrument. This year for music will be slightly different than most years, since we will be learning together virtually. We will still focus on learning various musical concepts, in addition to learning how to create our own musical works. We will also learn how to move to music and how to perform various rhythm patterns. My goal is to offer students a caring, safe environment in which to explore their musical abilities.
