Dr. Roberta M. Heyward, Principal
Dr. Heyward has served the Tappan School community since the fall of 2017. Prior to her time at Tappan, Dr. Heyward was principal at Bryant Elementary School since 2010. Dr. Heyward has experience as a middle school English Language Arts, Creative Writing, and Reading teacher; she was recognized as Teacher of the Year during the time she was teaching middle school. Dr. Heyward also taught at the elementary level.
Most recently, Dr. Roberta Heyward successfully defended her dissertation at the University of Michigan, Flint. She also holds an Education Specialist Degree in Administration/Leadership from Oakland University, a Master of Arts in The Art of Teaching from Marygrove College, and a Bachelor of Arts in Language Arts-Communications from the University of Detroit, Mercy.
Dr. Heyward has established a record as an experienced and successful administrator whose leadership skills are recognized throughout the Ann Arbor community and she is often sought out to serve on district-level committees and workgroups. She currently serves on the District Equity Team and the MTSS-SEL Committee. In 2014, Dr. Heyward was honored as a “Woman of Excellence” by the Michigan Chronicle.
In addition to spending time with her family, traveling, and learning, Dr. Heyward enjoys building relationships with students, staff/faculty, and families in the Tappan CommUNITY! She writes, “Each day, my goal is to foster an environment that is conducive to learning, an environment that will help to fortify the academic success of all students and the continued growth of our educators.”
