**WINTER GIVING TRAIN** PLEASE GIVE TODAY!  (We are 65% of the way to our goal!)

Like every winter, our office staff and social worker, Ms. Hite, work with the school community to support our families in need.  Before the pandemic, our “Giving Train” invited volunteers to shop and buy a gift or donate funds online.  This year, like last, we are making all contributions electronic in order to keep everyone safe!

We conducted a comprehensive needs assessment and found 60 kids in need of winter gear and support this year, and we know we can count on our community to help!  The goal is to provide each child with needed warm winter clothing (e.g. coat, boots, hat, gloves), a book, and a learning item (e.g. puzzle, art supplies, board game, Legos.)   We hope to raise $125 per child, so our goal is $7,625!  We know it’s a lofty goal with a lofty timeline, but we are encouraged by our community’s generosity and recognition that needs are great.

Please consider giving TODAY!  We will in turn shop and get the gifts delivered by mid/late December.  You can count on us to spend money prudently and in accordance with the needs of parents and hopes of children.  We are gathering the sizes, favorite colors, and book preferences from all our kids.  We invite you to get on this Giving Train of warmth and love by giving at whatever level you can.   Please visit https://a2steampto.square.site/ today.

WESO has modified the competition and put in place Covid 19 precautions.

    SPARE CLOTHES, RAINGEAR, MASKS

Keep in mind that elementary-aged students are outdoors at least 2-3 times a day. Elementary lunch periods last 48 minutes and some kids spend the entirety of that time outside. PLEASE be sure your child is prepared for light rain, cooler temperatures, and muddy conditions, and has an extra set of clothes in the backpack. Masks get pretty saturated after physical activity, so be sure your child packs extra masks too.   (PLEASE let the office know if your child is in need of clothes or gear.  We can help.)

    UPCOMING SPIRIT WEEK

    • Monday, October 24th - A2 STEAM spirit day (wear your spirit gear or blue & orange)

    • Tuesday, October 25th - Sports Team or College spirit day

    • Wednesday, October 26th - TIE-DAY day

    • Thursday, October 27th - Wacky Hat or hair day

    • Friday, October 28th - PAJAMA DAY!

(Note: At A2 STEAM we leave Halloween costumes at home. )

    TRIMESTER DATES

In case families are interested in trimester dates/ report card marking periods, here’s the info.

    DONATIONS OF CLOTHES

The office is going through a lot of clothes this fall as “accidents” are at an all-time high.  If you have small pants or shirts (i.e. for kids ages 4-7) to donate, please drop them off.

    A2 STEAM DIRECTORY IS COMPLETE!

Thank you for filling out our Directory and Permissions form. The staff & student directory is available at the link below. To view different homerooms, click on the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet. (It takes a minute to load on mobile devices.) Please make sure your student’s information is correct. If you require changes, please send an email to carriebank@gmail.com

    LUNCH SUPPORT NEEDED

We need additional noon-hour supervisors who can serve from 10:45 AM-1:45 PM several days a week.  Noon-hour supervisor pay is $16.50/hour.  The general AAPS posting is HERE.  Interested folks should apply AND email hoffmanns@aaps.k12.mi.us directly.  It does require fingerprinting so the process takes some time. The only education requirement is a high school diploma or GED.  I'd gladly hire college kids who would embrace playing with kids outside and/or walking about the MPR.

Alternatively, we will happily take parent/guardian volunteers for lunch or recess supervision.  At this time, we are only accepting fully vaccinated parent volunteers. If you can commit to a regular supervision schedule (i.e. at least one set day/week from 10:45 AM-1:45 PM), PLEASE fill out this form.   We would love to have parent volunteers who are willing to supervise or referee organized sports like basketball, soccer, and flag football. Thank you!

    POKEMON CARDS
Please keep those treasured Pokeman cards at home.  We are encountering issues with the cards throughout the day.

    BATHROOM VANDALISM

I am sad to report that some middle schoolers continue to deface the boys’ bathrooms with toilet paper, clogged urinals, and graffiti. If you hear conversation of who might be responsible, please reach out to fenechm@aaps.k12.mi.us.  Because it’s pervasive with the boys’ bathrooms, we MIGHT have to start locking them during class time. If issues don’t abate this week then we’ll lock them during class, they will be opened during passing time, and if middle school kids need restrooms during a class period, they can come to the office.

    PARENT/GUARDIAN RESOURCES

    • SISS Resources Site - Distribution and awareness, This site will provide staff and families with access to evidence based and AAPS-approved materials, resources, and tools.
    • Crisis Service
    • Community Resources - This page has resources to help support families and students. We focus on resources from existing nonprofits, businesses, and organizations in our local community.

    STUDENT ID CARDS

As a component of a new MI public law, students in grades 6-12 will have sucide hotline information printed on the back of their student ID cards.  These ID cards should be shipped to school this week.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SEASON 2 ATHLETICS & CLUBS

This week we will email middle school families about our season 2 offerings.  7th and 8th Grade Women's Basketball will begin Monday, November 1st.  We are encouraging vaccination for all students who qualify based on CDC Guidelines and we will require regular testing for students who are not vaccinated.  We are hoping to offer sports-related clubs this season too. More to come!

Sunday 10/24: Library Love Day! Support A2 STEAM's Library with Booksweet

On Sunday, October 24 from 10 am - 6 pm, 20% of your total in-store purchase at Booksweet (1729 Plymouth Road) will support the school library at A2 STEAM. How do you activate your support? At check-out on October 24, please make sure to mention that you're shopping to support A2 STEAM.

Want to make it social?  Come from 4:30-6:00 PM for a STEAM Readers Family Chit Chat with live music from STEAM students. Linger outside of the bookshop in the courtyard for a STEAM Readers Family Chit Chat. This is an informal, relaxed gathering for STEAM families to listen to music, get to know one another, talk about books, and reconnect.

Enjoy live music from STEAM student musicians from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Note: live music will be canceled if it’s raining.

You can also purchase books directly for the STEAM library from this list, and Team Booksweet will deliver them (and not just on the day of the event, any time!): https://lets.shopbooksweet.com/wishlist/14

    FROM THE PTO

    BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

Do you have a bag of unexpired Box Tops hanging around?  While the Box Tops program has mostly switched to receipt scanning in an app, there are still some products that have the old fashioned coupons.  We are going to send in a batch, so please send them to school in an envelope marked "PTO- Box Tops" by Friday October 22.  Please do not send any that expired prior to 11/1/21.  Thanks for your help!  The PTO receives 10 cents for every box top and they add up quickly.

    HAVE TENT, NEED TABLES

Thanks to the Vaughn and Baumeier-Wright families we have an amazing tent on the grass behind the building. Now we’d love to purchase 8 all-weather picnic tables to put underneath it for our students to enjoy lunch al fresco (outdoors). If you’d like to donate to our Outdoor Picnic Table Fund, head over to our Square site.   https://a2steampto.square.site/ Or use your phone to scan this handy QR code!

TWO DIFFERENT AFTER-SCHOOL OPTIONS from 826 MICHIGAN

This fall, 826michigan is offering *two* different after-school programs to meet each student's unique needs. Limited spaces are available, so please sign up today if your student would like to participate.

    • Virtual Schoolwork Support (homework-focused) - Ages 7-18
      • Thursdays: October 21 - December 16, 2021 (will resume in Winter 2022)  Session A: 4-5pm.    Session B: 5-6pm

826michigan’s Virtual Schoolwork Support Program is a FREE online program where students ages 7-18 can receive schoolwork support from trained volunteer tutors. This program is fully virtual and will be offered over Zoom. This year, we are asking all participating families/students to register in advance (see below for details) for the program and commit to a particular day of the week and time for the fall semester (ending in the second week of December). This program is homework-based–please keep this in mind as you register your student. Unfortunately, we cannot provide general tutoring at this time, and we ask that students bring homework or other school assignments to work on. If your student does not have homework regularly, please check out our After-school Writing Lab on Tuesdays.

    • After-school Writing Lab (writing-focused) - Ages 8-14
      • Tuesdays: October 19 - December 14, 2021    Session B: 5-6pm (Session A reserved for school partnership students)

A FREE weekly virtual program for students ages 8-14. During the fall semester, students work in small groups with peers and adult volunteers to brainstorm, write, revise, share, and publish their writing. This program is fully virtual and will be offered over Zoom. We ask all participating families/students to register in advance (details below) for the program and commit to weekly participation for the fall semester.

    • ASYNCHRONOUS WRITING KITS  - Free writing activities mailed to your home, organization, or school. Choose from a range of themes and genres for the whole family to enjoy together.
    • WEE-BOTS: A WEEKLY EVENING WORKSHOP - Free virtual writing sessions for young writers ages 5-10+! All ability levels are invited to these fun, informal sessions through which we read a book aloud together and then play around with writing, from the physical act of actually writing to the creative ideas involved.

CLICK HERE TO REGISTER!    You can also visit us in-person during limited hours at our Liberty Street location in downtown Ann Arbor to shop at the Robot Supply Co, or visit the Robot Supply Co online to shop anytime! All proceeds benefit 826michigan’s free writing programs in the community

    A MESSAGE FROM MR. WILLARD/PE

Effort levels in PE have been outstanding! I am so proud of your students for working so hard at being active, getting better at skills and staying engaged.  We are still seeing very few students bringing water bottles to PE.  Let’s double-check back packs for gym shoes too.  Many students have been running in boots and this makes for a very unsafe and muddy experience in PE.  This week move on to Foot Skills so start practicing those soccer-related activities at home to be ready for PE.

LAST CALL - DIRECTORY PERMISSIONS - DUE TODAY

Please take a moment to fill out the Directory and Permission to Publish form, it is important that all families fill out this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1blqIRO0ZIVHfRsMByq12qd5Yeox7hJkE4xE-vLXno8s/edit?ts=61489598

    FIRE DRILLS

In addition to the regularly scheduled fire drills that we practice each fall, we’ve had a few extra drills due to a faulty sensor that has erroneously sounded the fire alarms.  The AAPS Facilities department is going to fix the sensor this week.   On the bright side, our students are well-practiced on quickly exiting the building.

    FROM THE PTO

    PTO MEETING TONIGHT

    ROOM PARENTS NEEDED

Are you looking for a way to support your child’s teacher(s)? Sign up to be a Room Parent! Here is the list of staff still looking for helpers. We know parents can’t be inside the building just yet, but there are many other ways to help out. You can email the teacher listed, or our PTO Vice President and Room Parent Coordinator, Kelly Pennuto at kellyekipp@gmail.com

    SPIRIT WEAR

All spirit wear was distributed to homerooms on Friday! We look forward to seeing the new (hopefully labeled)  gear around school.

PARENTS CAN CHECK LOST & FOUND!

Each day from Monday, October 11th through Friday, October 15th, the Lost & Found will be shared on the BACK PATIO of the school so parents and students will have the chance to claim lost items. We urge you to look through the approximately 75 sweatshirts we’ve already collected plus the many water bottles, lunch boxes, and jackets.

    Let’s talk about labeling!

Is your student on their way out the door? Use a Sharpie to write their last name on the tag of their sweatshirt and jacket! Or stick a label on their lunchbox and water bottle. We try to return any labeled items to their owners.

Bonus! You can order labels here AND support A2 STEAM at the same time!

Just one returned hoodie will cover your cost. https://mabelslabels.com/en_US/fundraising/support/

MANY THANKS FOR OUR LARGE TENT!

We now have a 20' x 30’ tent on our playground, thank you for the generous donation from the Vaughn and Baumeier-Wright families.  Please join me in thanking them for their thoughtful donation! We look forward to using this large tent for lunch and outdoor learning throughout the year!  And thank you to Mr. Josh Tumolo (5th-grade teacher) for helping after school to erect the tent. While we have folding tables and metal folding chairs from the district, we are considering how we might acquire all-weather picnic tables too. We will continue to enhance our outdoor seating options, so we welcome all ideas and donations.

    COUNT DAY IS WEDNESDAY, 10/6

This day is used to help determine funding from the state, so attendance is very important. Please avoid any unnecessary absences if at all possible. Thank you!

    SAFETY FIRST!  COVID-19 UPDATES

The AAPS COVID-19 Health and Safety Protocols were updated 9/22.  Changes include the update to the daily student questionnaire about when to keep a child home from school and quarantine. We will continue to alert you when changes are made.

    PRETEND “PLAY” WITH WEAPONS

If your child engages in play with pretend weapons, please ask them to refrain from doing so at school. Even though hands/sticks made to act as weapons aren’t going to physically hurt a child, they can impact kids in other negative ways.

    TIKTOK CHALLENGE

We really don’t think October’s TikTok challenge will be acted out at A2 STEAM, but just to keep parents in the know, you can read here what's on the minds of teachers across the country. The consequence for physical assault of a staff member is severe. Rarely, do we need to refer to the AAPS Rights & Responsibilities Handbook. Nonetheless, we’ve linked it here if you’re interested.

    CHURCH PARKING

Northside Community Church parking lot will be closed October 6 & 7 for tree removal. Please plan accordingly for drop-off/pick-up on these days.

A2 STEAM FRONT PARKING LOT CLOSES @ 2:40PM

If you arrive after the front parking lot has been closed (chained off), please DO NOT pull in the “OUT” side of the parking lot.  This is very dangerous for our students, families, and staff. The chain is there to keep drivers out at dismissal. We have seen far too many instances of unsafe driving at arrival and dismissal, including simply stopping along Barton Drive.

    CHANGE IN DISMISSAL PLANS

If you need to change your child’s typical pickup plan on any given day, be sure to call the office 994-1958 if it’s later than noon.  DO NOT email your child’s teacher in the afternoon and expect teachers to read their emails before dismissal. When we receive a call in the office we get the message to the classroom teacher.

    OUTDOOR LUNCH/RECESS CLOTHING

We are trying to avoid indoor recess/lunch when there’s a mist or drizzle outside so please be sure your family is in the habit of checking the weather and packing accordingly.  It is also a good idea to have a change of clothes in your child’s backpack, even if they are in upper elementary school.  On the horizon we may organize a donation or collection of outdoor clothing so that all kids are prepared for rain and snowy conditions.
