Curriculum & Instruction Overview
The Ann Arbor Public Schools is dedicated to creating a teaching and learning environment that differentiates instructional strategies so that all students are benefited by robust career and college-bound opportunities. To this end, the district recently implemented a number of programmatic initiatives such as Northside K-8 STEAM school, expanded world languages, enhanced early childhood, Pathways to Success Academic Campus, pre K-12 International Baccalaureate and embedded engineering through Project Lead the Way at the elementary, middle and high school level. We recognize that students learn in different ways and achievement is demonstrated not only by the measured outcome but also by the joy of accomplishment and nature of the whole child.
From GRAMMY winning school music programs, to nationally ranked academic teams, to dual enrollment opportunities for high school students to earn college credit, our programs strive for excellence. Our Career and Technical Education program gives students the opportunity to develop hands on skills based on state standards. AAPS also stands out in the forward thinking and innovative opportunities for our students to earn credit via nontraditional means, such as blended and online classes in A2Virtual and community resource classes.
The mission of the Ann Arbor Public Schools Strategic Plan captures it best; the district aspires to be a world-class system of innovative teaching and learning, is to ensure each student realizes his or her aspirations while advancing the common good through a community dynamic distinguished by: personalized learning that is curiosity driven, student directed and teacher inspired; a challenging and provocative curriculum; individual and group creative expression; the nurturing of the human spirit; culturally congruent instruction; and forging alliances with families and community. To achieve these lofty goals, the district invests in on-going professional development for faculty, engages in global networking with other agencies, seeks community partnerships and continuously benchmarks achievement against multiple measures.
The district recognizes that excellence is not a destination but rather a path of continuous improvement, reformation and innovation.Ann Arbor Public schools aims to support students in becoming career & college-ready by engaging them in learning opportunities that:
