    Enrollment for 2020 – 2021 School Year

    Admission into Community High is based on the following:

    1. Grade - Applicants must be eligible for the grade for which they are applying.
    2. District Residency Requirements - Applicants must meet the AAPS residency requirements at the time of application or provide proof of future residency.
    3. Enrollment Process - Please read the Enrollment Process carefully that accompanies this Application Process & Timeline.
    4. Parent/Student Information Meeting & Open House - BOTH THE STUDENT AND PARENT MUST ATTEND A MEETING IN ORDER FOR THE APPLICATION TO BE INCLUDED IN THE RANDOM SELECTION. Parking is limited; arrive early.

    Among the students who complete all required steps of this application and enrollment process, 132 students will be admitted to the 9th grade class for the 2020-2021 school year through a double-blind random selection. The remaining applicants will form the waitlist for the class of 2024.

    • Tuesday,  January 14, 2020  – Application window opens online.
    • Tuesday, January 14 – Friday, February 14, 2020 – Complete online application. If you do not have Internet access, an online application station will be available in the Community High counseling office 8:00 AM–4:00 PM during school days of this application window. Print out your completed application and submission page as your receipt.
    • Friday, February 14, 2020 @ 5:00 PM – Deadline for applications to be submitted. Late applications will be added to the end of the waitlist in the order received; they WILL NOT be included in the random selection. One application per student will be accepted.
    • Tuesday, February 18, 2020 @ 9:00 AM – A list of student numbers (not student names) to be included in the random selection will be posted on the Community High School website (www.a2community.org). If your student’s number does not appear on the list, and you believe it should, please notify the Dean’s office by 4:00 pm on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 (734-994-2025).
    • Wednesday, February 19, 2020RANDOM SELECTION Results of random selection and official waitlist will be posted by student number (not student name) on Community’s website (www.a2community.org) at 7:30 PM.
    • Friday, February 21, 2020 – Middle schools, and private schools will be notified of the results.
    • Tuesday, March 3, 2020 - Connect with Community Shadow Day 1:45 – 4:00 PM. This is only for those students chosen in the random selection. It is a school visit for students to visit Forum, attend an assembly, and experience the school before the commitment date.
    • Friday, March 6, 2020Commitment Date Commitment Agreement received in CHS main office by 4:00 PM.
    • Thursday, May 7, 2020AAPS Transition Day District 8th graders visit the high school they will attend in the afternoon.

    Students who need help with any part of this application process should talk to their school counselors for assistance. Students accepted through the random selection will be able to learn additional details and next steps via information posted on the CHS website after the random selection results are posted.

    COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL

    ENROLLMENT PROCESS

    1. Selection is by a validated, double blind, random drawing, and is only for incoming 9th graders. Selection is not influenced by application responses. In grades 10-12, enrollment is based on available openings, determined no more than two weeks before each semester, from each grade level waiting list. CHS does not offer rolling enrollment.
    2. Families moving into the district may place their 8th grade student’s name in the lottery. Proof of future residency is required (see AAPS District residency requirements).
    3. In the lottery for incoming 9th graders, the first 132 numbers will be offered seats. The remaining numbers establish a waitlist for that grade. This waitlist is used to maintain enrollment levels as follows:
      • 9th   grade – 132 seats
      • 10th grade – 132 seats
      • 11th grade – 135 seats
      • 12th grade – 135 seats
    4. Before submitting an application, the parent/guardian AND student must attend an orientation meeting to be entered in the lottery.  Both the completed application and orientation are required.
    5. Enrollment priorities are in the following order:
      1. Correct number of students in grade
      2. Enrollment will be offered for up to three foreign exchange students residing with a full-time CHS student, pending final approval of the Dean. These foreign exchange students are accepted above the target enrollment for that grade and may not have previously earned a high school diploma in their home country.
      3. Children of CHS faculty members are accepted above the target enrollment for each grade level.
      4. No more than 2 children of AAPS employees (not at CHS) are accepted above the target enrollment for each grade level, in waitlist order from the random selection.
      5. CHS does not offer sibling or legacy enrollment.
    6. Students with disabilities will be afforded an equal opportunity to attend Community High School through the lottery process. Once students are selected to attend Community High School, CHS will promptly notify the Special Education Department to convene an individualized education planning meeting (IEP) or Section 504 meeting to make an individualized determination as to what services the student requires for a free appropriate public education (FAPE); whether the student can educationally benefit from the program offered at Community High School; and, if so, what steps need to be taken to provide the student with FAPE at CHS. Students will retain their lottery standing until the IEP or Section 504 process has been completed. Students will not be denied the opportunity to attend CHS unless the IEP or Section 504 team decides that they cannot participate in or benefit from the unique curriculum or programs offered. Parents will be notified in writing that any such decision may be challenged through an impartial due process hearing. Decisions to deny enrollment will not be based on administrative considerations such as availability of special education classes or services at Community High School.
    7. During the initial phases of enrollment, no students will be enrolled in a grade in excess of the target enrollment. If a student leaves the school but the number of students in the grade remains at or above the target enrollment, that student’s space will not be filled. 
    8. When called to fill a spot, parents have one week to respond. At the Dean’s discretion, this time could vary if consistent with others being called at that time.
    9. If parents are called and turn down an opening, their child will be removed from the waitlist.
    10. At the discretion of the Dean, a spot may be reserved for a student who travels overseas (semester abroad) or who transfers to another educational program or treatment center with the intent of returning to Community High School.
    11. The school community places a high value on maintaining a diverse student body. Every effort will be made to attract and retain families from a variety of backgrounds by encouraging them to enter the lottery.
