NATIONAL SCHOOL NURSE DAY
Wednesday, May 12, 2021
Today, May 12, 2021, we celebrate National School Nurse Day -- a day designated to celebrate school nurses who work as valuable members of our school team to support the health, wellness and learning of all students. School nurses are heroes right here in Ann Arbor Public Schools and to more than 50 million children across our nation’s schools.
National School Nurse Day honors all school nurses who every day care for children, as well as staff members, in our schools. School nurses are often the first place a student thinks to go when they don’t feel well or have been hurt, and they are a critical resource when a parent or staff member has important health questions. School nurses provide a wealth of real-time support, guidance and compassion each day; they share knowledge and information, reassure in critical moments, and support a healthy life for students and families and academic learning and growth at school.
For over a year during this COVID-19 crisis, our highly trained school nurses have continued as constant and immensely valued members of the AAPS COVID response team, leading in many critical, additional capacities to support our students, their families and staff. Our school nurse team has stepped up, demonstrating commitment, competence and care during this concerning COVID time. They have worked diligently to coordinate with public health agencies and provide guidance; they have been integral to contact tracing efforts for students and staff, COVID safety training for staff and COVID testing and vaccination clinics in the AAPS and Washtenaw County.
On behalf of the Ann Arbor Public Schools and the Board of Education, please join me in recognizing and thanking our school nurses for all they do every day for our children, their families and our colleagues.
Best wishes to all for good health,
Jeanice K. Swift
