Each year our nation observes National Hispanic American Heritage Month by honoring the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans whose ancestors arrived here from Mexico, Spain, Central and South America and the Caribbean.

While in the Ann Arbor Public Schools, we honor and celebrate the valued contributions of Hispanic Americans on every day of the year, we also participate in the national observance that falls mid-September to mid-October and coincides with the anniversaries of national independence for many of our Latin American neighbors: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile. This celebration provides an opportunity to listen and learn more about the rich diversity within Hispanic communities and the deep connections to all facets of American culture, literature and history.

The contributions of Hispanics and Latinos to our nation are many and widely known, beginning with the first known colony in America, the Spanish settlement of St. Augustine in Florida. Hispanics or Latinos have fought in every war since the American Revolution; they are our neighbors and esteemed community leaders, serving as business owners, veterans, teachers and public servants.

We draw strength from our shared values as a nation of immigrants. We take this time each year to reflect, recognize and celebrate the Latino community and its rich history, which are a fundamental part of our American heritage and who we are as a community and as a country.

We are a stronger Ann Arbor Public Schools community as we honor, embrace and celebrate our diversity, continually create a culture of belonging for all, and value the connections that unite us as an inclusive Ann Arbor community.

The Board of Education and I invite all in the AAPS and the Ann Arbor community to join us in celebration of National Hispanic American Heritage Month.
