November 29, 2021 - Loss of Pioneer Student

AAPS lead, care, inspire graphicDear Ann Arbor Staff, Families, and Community,

We have some very sad news today.

I am so sorry to share that Jaheim Lewis, Pioneer 11th grade student, has passed away. With permission from his family, we share that Jaheim succumbed to injuries suffered from a car accident on Saturday.

Jaheim attended Dicken and Slauson before coming to Pioneer. His sister is an 8th grader at Slauson. Jaheim had several friends across the district from Skyline, Huron and Pathways High Schools. He participated in auto tech and American Sign Language classes, and was also a sports enthusiast.

Today Pioneer and the district crisis teams are supporting students and staff. The Lewis family is also supported by the team at Peace Neighborhood Center. Our counselors will continue this work over the coming days so that our students and staff have ongoing support during this very difficult time.

We are all deeply saddened by the loss of Jaheim.  Please reach out and support each other.  Remember that this hard news affects everyone differently.  Sometimes it hits hard even for students, parents and staff who did not know Jaheim personally. This is especially true now.

We have included guidelines below to assist you as you have conversations with your child and with our students, parents and colleagues.

Let’s all reach out to support each other; we will need to remain vigilant for all those who may be struggling across our community just now.

I know that we all join together in the Ann Arbor Public Schools community today to extend our thoughts of loving support and deepest sympathy to his parents, family and friends, teachers and staff, and to all who knew and loved Jaheim.

Sincerely,

Jeanice Swift
