June 28, 2023 - Air Quality Message

Hello AAPS Community,

Air quality in Ann Arbor/Washtenaw County is in the "Purple" or very unhealthy zone today, according to AirNow.gov. We continue to monitor the air quality situation very closely and make adjustments to summer school and Rec and Ed programs to protect student and staff health. Rec and Ed has canceled all evening outdoor youth and adult sports scheduled for tonight.

Please note the following guidance:

People with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens:

  • Avoid physical activities outdoors.

Everyone else:

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities.

  • Keep outdoor activities short.

  • Consider moving physical activities indoors or rescheduling them.

*Air pollution can make asthma symptoms worse and trigger attacks. Symptoms of asthma include coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing and chest tightness. Even individuals who do not have asthma could experience these symptoms.

If symptoms occur:

The student might need to take a break, do a less intense activity, stop all activity, go indoors or use quick-relief medicine as prescribed. If symptoms don't improve, get medical help.

Our school teams will continue to monitor this situation closely and will adjust activities as needed. As always, parents with specific concerns for their student(s) should take the precautions they see best.

Sincerely,

Jeanice Kerr Swift
