Dear Pittsfield Staff and Community,
As you know, Ms. Melita Alston, Pittsfield Elementary School Principal, has accepted a new position as Executive Director, Early Childhood and Elementary Education in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. We are deeply thankful to Ms. Alston for her many years of service to the Pittsfield community and wish her the best as she steps into this next chapter of her career.
We understand that this will be a time of change for the Pittsfield community, and we are committed to ensuring a smooth transition for students, staff and families. As such, Ms. Caitlin Opfermann, current Pittsfield Lead Teacher and Title 1 Teacher will serve as the Interim Principal beginning on November 27, 2023. Mrs. Opfermann has served the Pittsfield community successfully as a Lead Teacher and Title 1 Teacher for 5 years and is very well-prepared to step into the interim principal role to support Pittsfield at this time.
Mrs. Opfermann shares, “I am committed to uplifting the voices of our staff, students and stakeholders and embracing our pillars of equity, dignity and belonging. Together, we will continue to focus on educating the whole child and ensuring that each student who walks through our doors feels welcomed, safe and loved.” Ms. Melita Alston will support the transition of Mrs. Opfermann into the Interim Principal role.
In the Spring, on a more traditional principal search timeline, we look forward to conducting a robust principal search, engaging the Pittsfield community in the interview process and proceeding with the successful selection of a permanent principal.
We look forward to opportunities for the Pittsfield community to wish Principal Alston well in her next chapter and to welcome Interim Principal Opfermann. We are excited to focus on supporting our students, staff and families to ensure this 2023-2024 school year is a wonderful success for our Pittsfield school community.
