August 1, 2024 - AAPS Superintendent Update
Greetings Ann Arbor Public Schools Community,
As we enter the month of August, we continue preparations for the 2024-2025 school year. We look forward to welcoming our students, teachers, staff, and families back to our schools and classrooms on August 26, 2024. At last night’s board of education meeting we shared an update on projected class size numbers, in particular at our Title 1 schools. As is customary each summer, our school and district teams are diligently working to ensure that class sizes and staffing levels are conducive for effective teaching and learning. Current class size numbers across all schools are preliminary and are not yet finalized. We continue to closely monitor and review enrollment data and building needs to balance staffing and classroom sizes as we approach the start of the school year.
During last night’s update we shared that due to additional staff attrition, voluntary transfers, and involuntary transfers in specialized areas – throughout the summer we have been able to recall 35 of the 59 teachers and administrators who were laid off. Whenever possible, we have returned recalled and involuntarily transferred staff members to the buildings where they taught this past school year. As enrollment and additional attrition continue to solidify over the coming weeks our goal is to recall more of the laid off staff.
As part of the work to appropriately staff our school buildings, we are actively contacting families regarding enrollment to gather the most accurate information as we make any necessary staffing adjustments. If you moved outside of the district this summer and want to preserve your child’s enrollment in the AAPS, the schools of choice window is open until August 8th. If you have not done so already, click here to apply to maintain your child’s enrollment in AAPS.
We hope you enjoy the last few weeks of summer break. We are looking forward to a successful start of the 2024-2025 school year. Thank you for being an essential part of our community.
Sincerely,
Jazz Parks
