This Week @ A2 STEAM

Posted by Meg Fenech on 11/21/2021

Wishing your family a healthy and Happy Thanksgiving!!  We are so grateful for our A2 STEAM school community.

Like every winter, our office staff and our social worker, Ms. Hite, work with the school community to support our families in need.  Before the pandemic, our “Giving Train” invited volunteers to shop and buy a gift or donate funds online.  This year, like last, we are making all contributions electronic in order to keep you safe!

We conducted a  comprehensive needs assessment and found 60 kids in need of winter gear and support this year, and we know we can count on our community to help!  The goal is to provide each child with needed warm winter clothing (e.g. coat, boots, hat, gloves), a book, and a learning item (e.g. puzzle, art supplies, board game, LEGO.)   We hope to raise $125 per child, so our goal is $7,625!  We know it’s a lofty goal with a lofty timeline, but we are encouraged by our community’s generosity and recognition that needs are great.

Please consider giving by Sunday, November 28th.   We will in turn shop and get the gifts delivered by mid/late December.  You can count on us to spend money prudently, and  in accordance with the needs of parents and hopes of children.  We are gathering the sizes, favorite colors, and book preferences from all our kids.  We invite you to get on this Giving Train of warmth and love by giving at whatever level you can.   Please visit today!  Let’s see if the A2 STEAM community can raise these funds in the next seven days!

The time is here for our annual Winter Arts Market!  If you are a maker of things, a singer of songs or a player of instruments, this is YOUR time!  As artists and craftspeople, you will have the opportunity to sell your wares virtually to people within our community and BEYOND! As a musician, you will have the opportunity to present a piece of music of your choice live/virtually during WAM’s opening ceremony!

Similar to last year’s market, we will be selling our wares in a VIRTUAL artist’s market, December 10-12, in order to make sure we are continuing to keep our community Covid safe.

Our names are Krista Takacs and Amy Lawson. We are the coordinators for Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad (WESO) at A2 STEAM.   Science Olympiad is an exciting competition where student teams participate in a variety of events involving subjects like engineering, math, biology, electronics, astronomy, programming, chemistry, and more.  Science Olympiad is designed to foster critical thinking, cooperative learning and the transfer of conceptual knowledge to hands-on challenges.  Science Olympiad is a volunteer led group.  In order to be successful we will need parent involvement to act as coaches from February through April, as well as volunteers on the day of the event.  This year, the Science Olympiad competition will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2022, at Pioneer High School. WESO has modified the competition and put in place Covid precautions.

An informational meeting on Science Olympiad for parents of 2nd through 5th graders will be held from 6:30-7:30PM on November 30th via Zoom. A Zoom link will be provided in the next weekly newsletter. There will be a short presentation followed by a question and answer period.  We would also like to discuss how parents are feeling about participating this year. The meeting is geared towards all parents of 2nd through 5th graders, as there are several changes proposed for this year.

If you are interested in being a coach, but cannot attend the meeting, please email us at and we can discuss the event you are interested in coaching.  WESO will host a meeting for coaches in late January 2022, via Zoom.    Please note that student sign-up will not begin until after Winter BreaKL.  If you have additional questions, please contact us at the e-mail address included above.

Next Sunday we will share oFDFCFur plan for holiday giving for our staff.
