AAPS Summer Music Program

  • The Ann Arbor Public Schools Music Program is open to all levels of instrumental music students, incoming grades 6-12 in Washtenaw County.  Students will have the opportunity to display their existing musical talent as well as be challenged with new skills. 

    Dates: Monday, June 12 through Thursday, June 29, 2023 - No Classes on Fridays

    Location: Skyline High School

    Fee: $200 per class; and $400 for the Music Day Camp

    Instrumental Music Day Camp

    When you register for camp, you will be asked to complete an online Course Selection Form.  Please read through all of the class descriptions on this webpage before completing the Course Selection form.  Students should choose one large ensemble class (Intermediate or Advanced Orchestra or Band) and may choose Jazz as their second class.  Students who do not choose Jazz class will be in a sectional class organized by instrument and experience.  An orchestra instrument means; violin, viola, cello, or bass.  A band instrument means; flute, oboe, bassoon, all clarinets, all saxophones, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, tuba, or percussion.

    *Note: 5th Grade Fun With Strings is a separate experience and is not included in the Day Camp course offerings

    Incoming
    Grades: 6, 7, & 8.  Students will have the opportunity to hone their craft through lessons on performance, music theory, and large ensemble skills. This day camp will include: large ensemble (band and orchestra) rehearsals, sectionals (by instrument or instrument family), multi-leveled instruction, and an All Camp Symphony experience (band and orchestra perform together). Physical movement activities will also be included.  The camp session will conclude with a concert.

    Jazz Lab (Intro to Jazz thru Improvisation)

    Incoming Grades 8-11.  No jazz experience required! All instruments welcome! Ever wondered how musicians learn to improvise? Or how to create a composition, or learn chord changes? Experience music in a completely different way in our Jazz Lab class- where students will have fun learning about this amazing American artform! In our class, students will:

     

    1) Develop an understanding of group interactions in a small jazz ensemble format through listening

     

    2) Learn the basics of jazz and music theory through songs from the jazz repertoire

     

    3) Compose their own solos (or melodies) to perform with the class.

     

    We’ll work together as a class to learn songs, create solos, and jam! This class is for all instruments- winds, strings, piano and guitar! Students will have the opportunity to showcase their learning through both an evening  performance experience with the Paul Keller Orchestra as well as a final concert at the end of the camp.

Students will learn about jazz through ensemble playing, starting from the foundations of the music- from learning how to play “swing” rhythms to the beginnings of creating our own compositions and solos. We will learn music from different eras, from the traditional sounds of New Orleans to the swing band sounds of Basie and Ellington and beyond.  This class is for ALL instruments- winds, strings, piano, guitar and others!

    Rising Grades 9-12.  For students who’ve had performance experience either in a jazz ensemble or another instrumental ensemble. In this group, students will have fun playing some rewarding charts written by some of the great composers and arrangers of the jazz world. Students will have the opportunity to showcase their learning through both an evening  performance experience with the Paul Keller Orchestra as well as a final concert at the end of the camp.

    Instrument Rental for students taking the Summer Music Program.

    Students currently enrolled in an Ann Arbor Public School music program AND taking Summer Music are eligible to rent an instrument for $25 for the summer if available. Complete a Summer Music Instrument Rental Registration Form and print a receipt of payment to show your music teacher as proof of payment in order to receive your instrument.
     
    • PLEASE MAKE ARRANGEMENTS TO GET YOUR INSTRUMENT BEFORE THE CLOSE OF SCHOOL FROM YOUR CURRENT TEACHER EXCEPT 5TH/8TH GRADERS MOVING TO MIDDLE OR HIGH SCHOOL NEXT YEAR.
