AAPS Summer Music Program

    Summer Music 2021

    The Ann Arbor Public Schools Summer Music Program is open to all levels of instrumental music students, grades 6-12 in Washtenaw County.

    Students will have the opportunity to display their existing musical talent as well as be challenged with new skills. 

    Dates: Monday, June 14 through Thursday, July 22, 2021 (See below for individual class or camp dates)

    Locations: Huron & AAOpen (In-person instruction)

    Fee: $150 per class and $300 for the Music Day Camp

    Online only registration & payment begins Wednesday, April 28, 2021 through MyPaymentsPlus

  • Class Offerings and Descriptions

    Jazz Band I - Improvising through Composition

    Monday-Thursday June 14-July1


    Grades 6-8. Students will have the opportunity to gain knowledge in improvisation and composition through exciting scale games and fun group activities. Compositions can be done through collaborations or individual efforts. This is a great class for beginning to intermediate middle schoolers who would like to learn new scales and gain additional information about their instrument. Students will have an opportunity to learn and grow through their own creativity in a fun and encouraging atmosphere.

    Students will present a solo or composition of their choice during a virtual jazz concert.

    All City Jazz Combo

    Grades 6-12 Students will further their knowledge in jazz theory, improvisation and small ensemble concepts. This class will focus on the following:

    1. Listening exercises to develop an understanding of group interactions in a small jazz ensemble format.
    2. Further knowledge in Jazz Theory.
    3. Improvisation through composition- students will have the opportunity to compose their own solos by combining their own ideas with existing solos and melodies.

    Projects can be done in an individual or collaborative effort.

    Students will combine the information obtained from the class to create their own individual solos or compositions to be presented at a virtual jazz performance at the conclusion of the camp.

    All City Jazz Big Band

    Grades 9-12. Further your skills as a section player or big band soloist. This class will focus on the various approaches to rhythm, phrasing, articulations and improvisation in a jazz large ensemble. Students will have the opportunity to compose section solos as well as individual big band solos. This is a GREAT class to further your contribution in a high school jazz ensemble. Projects can be done as individual or group efforts.

    Students will present their individual or group projects during a virtual performance at the conclusion of the camp.

    Beginning and Intermediate Percussion Drumline
    7/5 - 7/15 (2 weeks, 1.5 hr. class) (Session 1)

    Grades 6-8. This is an opportunity for the percussion section to "Be the Stars." Students will learn a variety of marching percussion instruments, fundamentals, rudiments and technique in a marching band style. Beginning students are encouraged to participate.

    Instrumental Music Day Camp

    Grades: 6, 7, & 8.  Students will have the opportunity to hone their craft through lessons on performance, music theory, composition and improvisation. This day camp will include: large ensemble (band and orchestra) rehearsals, sectionals (by instrument or instrument family), multi-leveled instruction, and an All Camp Symphony experience (band and orchestra perform together). Physical movement will also be included.  The camp session will conclude with a concert.

    Ann Arbor Intermediate Orchestra Ensemble

    Grades 6 & 7. This class is for students who have played violin, viola, cello or bass for less than 2 years. This is an orchestra experience for students looking for a moderate challenge in a relaxed and fun environment.

    Ann Arbor Advanced Orchestra Ensemble

    Grades 7 & Up. This class is for students who have played violin, viola, cello or bass for more than 2 years. This is an orchestra experience for students looking for a moderate challenge in a relaxed and fun environment.

    Ann Arbor 5th Grade Fun with Strings

    Grades 5 & Up. Miss playing all your favorite 5th Grade Songs on the violin, viola, or cello? For three weeks, we will explore and review songs we learned this past school year and a few new ones. We welcome beginners of all skill levels with less than 1 year of experience to the class.

  • INSTRUMENT RENTAL


    Instrument Rental for students taking the Summer Music Program.

    ID# 21-R1    FEE $25
    Students currently enrolled in an Ann Arbor Public School music program and taking Summer Music are eligible to rent an instrument for $25 for the summer if available. Complete a Summer Music Instrument Rental registration and print a receipt of payment to show your music teacher as proof of payment in order to receive your instrument.
     
    • Please make arrangements to get your instrument before the close of school from your current teacher except 5th/8th graders moving to Middle or High School next year.

    • IMPORTANT** CURRENT 5TH GRADE AND 8TH GRADE STUDENTS WILL CONTACT THEIR 6TH GRADE OR 9TH GRADE MUSIC TEACHER TO OBTAIN INSTRUMENT TO RENT OVER THE SUMMER
     
    AAPS students who would like to rent an instrument for the SUMMER ONLY, but not participating in the Summer Music Program, should enroll in ID# 21-R2.  Eligibility: A student must be enrolled in an Ann Arbor Public School music program during the regular school year. Instrument should be returned cleaned, to Summer Music teacher or make arrangements to return it to school of origin by first day of school, Fall 2021.

    Instrument Rental for students renting for the summer only and NOT enrolling in the Summer Music Program.

    ID# 21-R2    FEE: $50
