AAPS Summer Music Program

The Ann Arbor Public Schools Music Program is open to all levels of instrumental music students, incoming grades 6-12 in Washtenaw County. We will also have an offering for any music student, incoming grades 5-8 to do Orff instruments in our newly formed Orffestra Camp.
Students will have the opportunity to display their existing musical talent as well as be challenged with new skills.
Dates: Monday, June 13 through Thursday, July 28, 2022 (See below for individual class or camp dates)
Locations: Huron, Ann Arbor Open and Pioneer (in-person)
Fee: $150 per class; $250 for the Orffestra Camp; and $300 for the Music Day Camp

Jazz Band I - Improvising through Composition

Incoming Grades 6-8. Students will have the opportunity to gain knowledge in improvisation and composition through exciting scale games and fun group activities. Compositions can be done through collaborations or individual efforts. This is a great class for beginning to intermediate middle schoolers who would like to learn new scales and gain additional information about their instrument. Students will have an opportunity to learn and grow through their own creativity in a fun and encouraging atmosphere.
Students will present a solo or composition of their choice during a virtual jazz concert.

All City Jazz Combo

Incoming Grades 6-12. Students will further their knowledge in jazz theory, improvisation and small ensemble concepts. This class will focus on the following:
1) Listening exercises to develop an understanding of group interactions in a small jazz ensemble format.
2) Further knowledge of Jazz Theory.
3) Improvisation through composition- students will have the opportunity to compose their own solos by combining their own ideas with existing solos and melodies.
Projects can be done in an individual or collaborative effort.
Students will combine the information obtained from the class to create their own individual solos or compositions to be presented at a virtual jazz performance at the conclusion of the camp.

All City Jazz Big Band

Incoming Grades 9-12. Further your skills as a section player or big band soloist. This class will focus on the various approaches to rhythm, phrasing, articulations and improvisation in a jazz, large ensemble. Students will have the opportunity to compose section solos as well as individual big band solos. This is a GREAT class to further your contribution in a high school jazz ensemble. Projects can be done as individual or group efforts.

Instrumental Music Day Camp

Cost $300
Incoming Grades: 6, 7, & 8. Students will have the opportunity to hone their craft through lessons on performance, music theory, composition and improvisation. This day camp will include: large ensemble (band and orchestra) rehearsals, sectionals (by instrument or instrument family), multi-leveled instruction, and an All Camp Symphony experience (band and orchestra perform together). Physical movement will also be included. The camp session will conclude with a concert.

Ann Arbor Intermediate Orchestra Ensemble

Ann Arbor 5th Grade Fun with Strings

Incoming Grades 6 & Up. Miss playing all your favorite 5th Grade Songs on the violin, viola, or cello? For four weeks, we will explore and review songs we learned this past school year and a few new ones. We welcome beginners of all skill levels with less than 1 year of experience to the class.

Orffestra

Cost: $250
Incoming Grades: 5, 6, 7, 8. Students will collaborate to recreate popular songs using xylophones, also known as “Orff” instruments. Everything from the songs, instruments, rhythms and notes will be selected by the students and put together in a workshop-style summer camp.
