    The Ann Arbor Public Schools Summer Music Program is open to all levels of instrumental music students, grades 6-12 in Washtenaw County.

    Dates: Monday through Thursday, July 6 through July 31 , 2020.

    Locations: Virtual Learning

    Fee: $150

  • Virtual Class Offerings and Descriptions

    Jazz Band I - Improvising through Composition

    Grades 6-8. Students will have the opportunity to gain knowledge in improvisation and composition through exciting scale games and fun group activities. Compositions can be done through collaborations or individual efforts. This is a great class for beginning to intermediate middle schoolers who would like to learn new scales and gain additional information about their instrument. Students will have an opportunity to learn and grow through their own creativity in a fun and encouraging atmosphere.

    Final Virtual Performance-Students will present a solo or composition of their choice during a virtual jazz concert.

    All City Jazz Combo

    Grades 6-12 Students will further their knowledge in jazz theory, improvisation and small ensemble concepts. This class will focus on the following:

    1. Listening exercises to develop an understanding of group interactions in a small jazz ensemble format.
    2. Further knowledge in Jazz Theory.
    3. Improvisation through composition- students will have the opportunity to compose their own solos by combining their own ideas with existing solos and melodies.

    Projects can be done in an individual or collaborative effort.

    Final Virtual Performance-Students will combine the information obtained from the class to create their own individual solos or compositions to be presented at a virtual jazz performance at the conclusion of the camp.

    All City Jazz Big Band

    Grades 9-12. Further your skills as a section player or big band soloist. This class will focus on the various approaches to rhythm, phrasing, articulations and improvisation in a jazz large ensemble. Students will have the opportunity to compose section solos as well as individual big band solos. This is a GREAT class to further your contribution in a high school jazz ensemble. Projects can be done as individual or group efforts.

    Final Virtual Performance-Students will present their individual or group projects during a virtual performance at the conclusion of the camp.

    Beginning and Intermediate Percussion Drumline

    Grades 6-8. This is an opportunity for the percussion section to "Be the Stars." Students will learn a variety of marching percussion instruments, fundamentals, rudiments and technique in a marching band style. Beginning students are encouraged to participate.

    Grades ANY. This is an experience for students to work with composition, garage band/electronic music production, chamber music (can have kids record their parts with metronomes and video/audio edit them together)

    Summer Band Academy

    Grades: This academy is targeted at incoming 6th graders, 7th and 8th graders. Students will have the opportunity to hone their craft through lessons on performance, music theory, composition and improvisation. They will be able to virtually connect with peer musicians from across the district. Students will also have the opportunity to "digitally perform" an original band composition by district teacher and composer Erin Lilliefors (Forsythe, A2Open), and learn about the multi-tracking process that is used commonly in the music world. Peer-learning groups will be based on instrumentation/skill level.

    Ann Arbor Viola Party

    Grades 6 & Up. Ever wonder what a perfect ensemble would look like? Welcome to Viola Party! For these four weeks, we will explore the viola through various viola ensembles and pieces of music specifically designed for viola. We welcome violists of all skill levels with at least one year of middle school viola experience.

    Ann Arbor 5th Grade Fun with Strings

    Grades 5 & Up. Miss playing all your favorite 5th Grade Songs on the violin, viola, or cello? For four weeks, we will explore and review songs we learned this past school year and a few new ones. We welcome beginners of all skill levels with less than 1 year of experience to the class.
