After-School Activities Canceled Today

Hello AAPS Community,

Due to the winter storm warning issued by the National Weather Service beginning at 2 PM today,

All after-school activities, including Rec & Ed, in the Ann Arbor Public Schools are canceled for today, Friday, March 3rd.

As is always the case, parents who have any concerns about inclement weather forecasted may pick up their students early.

AAPS middle and high schools will dismiss at the regular time, and will use an expedited  process for transportation with buses departing schools a few minutes ahead of schedule

We ask all families to arrange to have their students picked up promptly today by the dismissal time, as it is also important to ensure a safe end-of-day departure for our school teams.

Elementary schools and K-8 buildings are already scheduled for a half day and we will proceed with that schedule.

Sincerely,

Jeanice Kerr Swift

Electrical Outage Ice Storm Emergency School Closure and Update

The Ann Arbor Public Schools will be closed on Friday, February 24th, due to power outages.

All after-school activities are canceled, and all school buildings will be closed

Nineteen school campuses among our AAPS school buildings remain without power as of 4:00 PM today, Thursday, February 23rd, and these locations will not have power tomorrow. DTE officials have shared in emergency operations meetings today that the goal is to have power restored to southeast Michigan schools by Monday.

As soon as power is restored, we will work to reset systems in our buildings, including HVAC, internet, phones and some critical safety services, to ensure the safe operation of our schools. Our Food Services team will also continue working hard over this weekend on the logistics necessary to provide meals when students return.

Ann Arbor’s network of emergency food resources, including in the  AAPS, has been impacted by the wide-spread power outages. Emergency food pantries are listed on the Food Gatherers Find Food webpage. Please call Food Gatherers at 734-761-2796 to confirm that a pantry is open or to speak to a staff member if you have any questions about finding the right program for you.

All Ann Arbor District Library branches are open and have power at this time. The Malletts Creek, Traverwood and Pittsfield branches will all stay open until 10 PM Thursday night. The Downtown Library will stay open until 8 PM Thursday night. The Westgate branch is open through 11 PM Friday. More information about shelters can be found here.

Important Caution Regarding Downed Lines

Due to the high number of downed wires (close to 3,000), DTE officials are urging everyone to stay indoors and out of their yards at this time. Fallen trees and limbs can hide energized wires. Stay in your home if you can, and keep kids and pets in the house as well. You can report a downed power line to DTE Energy here.

Our Next Steps in the AAPS

We will continue to work with our City, County and University of Michigan emergency operations team to remain updated on this outage situation and the unfolding impacts. We will work vigorously to prepare our buildings and grounds for a safe return of students and staff, and we will remain in close contact with our AAPS community over this weekend regarding this situation as additional updates of significance unfold.

We appreciate your partnership and support during this time as we work to safely return our students to school. Today and over the coming days is an excellent time to reach out and support each other, to check in with your neighbors and classmates, as we all work together to navigate this electrical outage and ice storm emergency as an Ann Arbor community.

Sincerely,

The Ann Arbor Public Schools will be closed on Thursday, February 23rd.

All after-school activities are canceled for the day, and all school buildings will be closed

The closure decision is based on ensuring the safety of students and staff, and we take school closure decisions very seriously.

Specifically, power outages are currently impacting many of our school buildings across the Ann Arbor community, restoration times remain uncertain due to significant impact across the area. Many downed electrical lines further complicate the current situation, and the expectation continues that icy roads will impact bus transportation in the morning.

Important: please caution students to be safe and remember to stay at least 25 feet from any downed power lines and anything that is touching a downed line and assume they are live and dangerous. You can report a downed power line to DTE Energy here.

As is our commitment, when possible, we are sharing this school weather closure announcement tonight in order to give families some time to make arrangements.

Members of our team will continue working through the night and day tomorrow to fully restore building systems as power is restored, and we look forward to having our students and staff return to school on Friday, February 24th.
