High School Social Studies
Ann Arbor high school students earn the three social studies credits required for graduation by completing: (1) World History & Geography (1.0 credit), (2) US History & Geography (1.0 credit), (3) United States Government (.5 credit), and (4) Economics (.5 credit). The three credits must be earned in the span of grades 9-12, to meet the graduation requirement.
The scope and sequence for Social Studies instruction in the Ann Arbor Public Schools is aligned with the State of Michigan High School Content Expectations (HSCEs). The Michigan High School Content Expectations for Social Studies reflect best practices and current research in the teaching and learning of Social Studies and represent a vision for a rigorous and relevant high school experience for all Michigan students. Special attention has been paid to national research and support for the skills that prepare students for successful post-secondary education and future roles in the work place and society. For further information see the report Understanding University Success.
Students whose work is guided by these standards and expectations will be prepared for responsible citizenship, post-secondary education, and the workplace.
